I am adding a 55 watt smartlight PC retrofit kit, to an existing smartlight hood. The existing hood has the switch wired between the ac input and the ballast. The instructions for the retrofit kit have the switch wired in between the ballast and the lamp. Any suggestions on how it should be done.?

I'd wire it the way yours is now. There is no need for the ballast to stay on at all times for and switch the lamps on and off.
