Wireless Cable Modem for Cable Internet

Well is this going to be risky going wireless, or should I just do it the old fashion way with wires and cables strung along the house?
Brand preferences? Or it doesn't matter?

We love our wireless! We have four computers and we also have our printer on wireless!:cheer: Not to mention the lap top. It's like a cordless phone, after awhile you think.....how did we ever use a phone with a cord????????????:notsure:

linksys is probably one of the best....that and belkin
you can hook your cable modem to the router in an un noticable area....ten use the wireless receivers and have no wires whatsoever running through your house

Yeah, but what about quality of reception, or whatever you call it. Cordless phones are not always that good.
I was looking at the Lindsey BEFCMU10 EtherFast and the wireless G router that kinda goes with it.
Does anyone use Comcast? That is my cable company.
BTW: Everyone who was "thinking about going cable" there is a $20 a month for 6 months deal going with Comcast via internet purchase. I couldn't resist that. I need to hook up 2 computers.

We have Comcast and are very pleased with the service. We have the linksys router and modem. (cheaper than renting it from comcast) That $20.00 bucks is a great deal! We pay $48.00.

we have linksys and so far so good. Like I stated before sometimes with our 2.4 GHZ cordless phone the computer that is wirelesss gets a little squirelly. And thats only if your right by the computer. Otherwise, its great.

IFish2, do you know what kind of modem comcast uses? I thought it was an RCA that was pretty crappy. Will comcast hook up the router, etc?
Don't you loose some speeed using wireless?

Another dumb question: This deal includes a free motorola modem after hassle rebates, waiting period, etc. If I get this modem, can I still do wireless router for the 2nd pc??

It was an RCA. He wanted Linksys so my husband did it, I can't help you on "if they will hook it up". You should be able to hook up without any problems. We could walk you thru it I'm sure. What area do you live?
We didn't loose any speed. We are very happy with wireless.

you only need the router for the cable modem.....
here is a horrible picture i drew up

now you can connect computers directly to the router if you want...linksys has a four port switch built into theirs as do most other companys.

You can use almost any modem with wireless router. Lots of places to check, try dslreports.com
Most likely comcast will not hookup the router for you, but the directions that come with it are pretty good. Also if you need to call tech support, they almost always give you a hard time if your using a router.
Speed will not be any less with wireless. Wireless connections vary, depending on signal strength, but lets say average 10 MPS. Cable average about 1 MPS. So your wireless connection is still faster than your cable connection. Wireless is slower when transfering data between computers.
Also make sure that you purchase wireless that is 802.11G. Should be right on the box. Also good to buy the same brand wireless card, as the router.
You can tweak the connection as well, if you want to mess with it. There is a lot of good info at dslreports.com

Stacy, what is a wireless card?
Well I placed the order with comcastoffers. I think you have to get the motorola surfboard modem that they are offering with that deal. Then you get rebates on it.
Is there anything that goes into the PC itself? What do you mean by wireless card?
Should I try and find a motorola router to go with it? Geewiz, sorry for all the questions but this is kinda of a last min decision since the offer ends on the 30th. I'm trying to read as much as I can today but I end up with just having more questions.
Thanks.

That modem should work with most wireless routers. I would go with a d-link, myself. The motorola seems to be a popular modem, and I couldn't find a list of any known issues with it, and any of the available brand routers. The cable modem will plug directly into the router.
The router accepts a wired/wireless connection from a computer. If the computer is right next to the router, than just take the cable from the computer, and plug it into the router.
If the computer is a long distace away from the cable router, you'll need a card, that plugs into the computer, and transmits a signal to the router. A wireless network card.
You should be able to buy a complete kit, that includes the card, router, and cables. It will also contain instructions on how to connect the computers to the wireless router. This would probably be the best option, if you can find it. d-link has a kit on the market that is pretty nice. The card is a USB card, so no need to open the computer to plug it in.
