Well, I took my water to my LFS to have them test it also to make sure and they said all looked good. Made my first small purchase today. 3 damsels and 8 red leg hermits. Want to start real small. I am acclaimating them now so wish me luck!

i will wish you luck. also good luck trying to get those damsels back out of the tank. lol
LOL for sure. I wanted to start with something pretty inexpensive to start with since this is my first tank. I would have hated to spend $20-$30 on a fish for it to die on me and get a bad taste in my mouth. So I went with some green damsels to start. I will probably wait about a week and add another fish. Thanks for the wish of luck. I am excited!

I would suggest waiting a bit longer than a week say 2 or 3 just to be safe and even then remember to add slowly dont just go out and buy 5 fish you'll "shock" the system otherwise GOOD LUCK!!

I will probably wait till after Christmas and add 1 more. Figured 3 little damsels should not shock it to bad since the crabs really don't add to the bioload. Thanks guys.

yeah youll be ok like that, I have a friend that started the same time as I did he added like 5 or 6 fish at once and had a hell of a time not killing them all (he thought he was cycled....NOT)

Well I am starting day four. Everything is still alive and kicking! All 8 of my crabs and 3 damsels doing fine. The green damsels have so much personality, they just watch me looking at them waiting to be fed.

Well on day six we lost a red leg hermit. Don't know what happened to him just found him at the bottom without his shell. Checked the water parameters and all is good, no ammonia, no trites.

Are you sure the red leg didn't molt and move to another shell? You do have some extra shells in the tank right? Hermits like to upgrade their "house" as they grow larger. The molt will look almost identical to a dead crab.

You know, I didn't think of that. I haven't gotten new shells yet. Only had them 6 days. Going to LFS tomorrow or Saturday and will get some. Guess though if he didn't have another shell to go into then he wouldnt have came out would he? If he outgrow the one shell and didn't have another one to go into what would they do?

My experience with hermits is that they will not leave their shells unless they spot a nice new and empty one that they might want to move into. My hermits have eaten snails and then moved into the snails shell after eating it-talk about agressive! I have also seen my hermits tussle over a snail-one will drag it away and the other will try to pull it back.
If you do ever see your hermits molt and then move into a new shell, it's a pretty cool thing to see. They will come partially out of their shell, check out the new digs with antennae and feelers, then just crawl out of the old and into the new.
While hermits are pretty hardy, they will kill and eat each other and keep in mind that when you do get some snails to help with your algae, that hermits love nothing more than to eat them a nice juicy little snail. My snails that have survived stay up on the glass and PH's to keep out of the way of the hermits.

Yeah, it was pretty cool. Today I got some empty shells and dumped in there. Within 10 min one of them found them and crawled all over one, flip it around like it was shopping. THen all of a sudden popped out and jumped into the new shell! Never seen that before. I guess he didn't like the fit cause hit jumped back out and then got in the old one but it was pretty cool to see.
I added my next 2 specimens today. One clown and 1 cleaner shrimp. That is all I will be adding for awhile. I want this thing to stabilize good. Figured I would give it about 3-4 months before I try to add any corals or anemones to it. I am just enjoying my damsel, clown, shrimp and crabs now. This is my first jump into this hobby and loving it!

How big is your tank??
You said it's small, and 4 fish in a little over aweek seems a bit fast to me.
All i hear are bad things bout damsels. The three aren't abig deal if it's just them, but what fish are you going to add next?? The damsels will most likely pick on anything you add. Maybe even the clown, not sure though.
maybe you should let the tank run w/ the stuff you have now for a few weeks, then return the damsels, and then replaces them w/ new fish. Maybe a sixline, firefish, or purple firefish, or royal gramma. I think all those fish look nicer than the damsel, and are more peaceful (as long as your tank is big enough).
You are going to love your cleaner shrimp by the way.

I have a 55 gal. I love my damsels. THey are green chromis and are pretty peaceful compared to the other damsels. The clown and them get along great, finally accepted him. I am not adding anything else for probably at least a month unless it is some snails or invert or something. Levels are all holding stable right now. Seems to do fine with the 4 fish. I have named the 3 damsels so I couldn't take them back if I wanted to lol. Grown attached since they were my first fish. The big one is Reese, the middle sized one is Malcom, and the little one is Dewey. I love Malcom in the middle show if you can't tell lol.
