PORTLAND – About two dozen women marched topless from Longfellow Square to Tommy's Park this afternoon in an effort to erase what they see as a double standard on male and female

A group of women and men who had shed their tops march down a Congress Street sidewalk from Longfellow Square to Tommy's Park. They were promoting the freedom of women to be topless in public. The group attracted many amateur and professional photographers.
The women, preceded and followed by several hundred boisterous and mostly male onlookers, many of them carrying cameras, stayed on the sidewalk because they hadn't obtained a demonstration permit to walk in the street. About a thousand people gathered as the march passed through Monument Square, a mix of demonstrators, supporters, onlookers and those just out enjoying a warm and sunny early-spring day.
After the marchers reached Tommy's Park in the Old Port, some turned around and walked back to Longfellow Square, but most stayed and mingled in the park. Some happily posed for pictures.
Police said there were no incidents and no arrests –

[hr]
is illegal in Maine only if genitals are displayed.
Ty McDowell, who organized the march, said she was "enraged" by the turnout of men attracted to the demonstration. The purpose, she said, was for society to have the same reaction to a woman walking around topless as it does to men without shirts on.

However, McDowell said she plans to organize similar demonstrations in the future and said she would be more "aggressive" in discouraging oglers.
I can't stop laughing at this article... The general concept and the crazy woman who got mad because a buncha guys showed up. bahaha

I have no problem if the ladies in my area want to walk around topless. Well .... there are some that I would rather see them with their shirt on.

my daughter was in Portland a few weeks ago for a racquetball tourney and she heard rumblings of this. She couldn't imagine why any female would want to wander the streets without a top on knowing that a ton of people would show up with cameras. She said her first impression of Portland was it was a "hippie" town, so it wouldn't surprise her if this would actually happen. (she liked Portland, but "odd" people who didn't pay attention to the rules of the road)

So whose the historian who can tell us when America became so 'stuck up' when it came to looking at a woman without a shirt on? The US is one of the few nations in this world that equates topless women with $exual perversion. Go to any beach in Europe, Mexico, or South America, and topless women are commonplace. Most women in Africa walk around with hardly anything on their bottoms, much less on their tops. Personally I think it's what I term as 'bible thumpers' who demonized a woman walking around with covering on her bosoms. Some religious fanatic equated it to 'Satan's Work', and it went on from there. Personally, I don't get it. I know some guy's who have 'man boobs' bigger than some women I know.

As a bible thumper myself, I personally find bosoms one of God's finest creations... :) Personally I think this is just another way liberal kooks are trying to ruin some good fun. By trying to take away from a woman's body... To clarify, woman should be allowed to walk around topless, and men shouldn't enjoy every second of it. That is liberal logic for you...

beach and streets are two different things. Most public places require shirts and shoes for both s3xes. I don't think history will reveal that american's turned womens tops into a perversion. Waaaay back when ....women did not walk around topless, infact they were more covered up than they are today.

hahah the "bro"... or the "manzier"
That was one of the most entertaining episodes of Seinfeld ever.
I dunno what to think about all this....
Do I want to go out in public and see some women without a shirt on? nope... I think it's just not necessary. But If I were to go to a beach or walk around my yard or whatever without a top on... I couldn't blame anyone for looking... man or women. And obviously some of these women weren't offended because it said that after the march, a lot of the women stayed in the park and posed for pictures. So they couldn't have been that mad about the "torment" or whatever.

This e-mail I got today seems timely
WALK Na-ked IN AMERICA DAY
Don't forget to mark your calendars.
As you may already know, it is a sin for Muslim males to see any woman other than his wife

[hr]
and if he does, he must commit suicide. So next Saturday at 1 PM Eastern Time, all American women are asked to walk out of their house completely Na-ked to help weed out any neighborhood terrorists.
Circling your block for one hour is recommended for this anti-terrorist effort.
All patriotic men are to position themselves in lawn chairs in front of their houses to demonstrate their support for the women and to prove that they are not Muslim terrorist sympathizers. Since Islam also does not approve of alcohol, a cold 6-pack at your side is further proof of your patriotism.
The American government appreciates your efforts to root out terrorists and applauds your participation in this anti-terrorist activity.
God bless America !

There probably wasn't a looker outta the whole lot though....

I do agree with Bionic, there are several other things at hand that represent this issue as a whole. Personally I think it's the isolationism with the US. In the 1800's, there wasn't really a difference. A girl showing knee skin was a

in Britain or the US back then. But as we continued along, mostly on our own, we didn't 'evolve' like the rest of the world. However, I personally feel we passed the "point of no return." We really can't have nudie beaches, because of the wackos that would go there (which them becoming 'wackos,' I believe is caused, at least partially, due to them not being accustom to nud!ty). We can't abolish drinking age limits like other countries, because we'd probably loose most of our teenagers not growing up around legal drinking and them not being able to control themselves. And so on....

It is comical that with every single discussion that occurs on this forum, you have to blame it on the liberals. What happened to you when you were younger (which is comical in itself, since you're just a young pup at 26), that made you have this vial disdain for anything considered to espouse liberal traits or values? I honestly have never met someone that is as far right as you.

Simple, I have a STRONG disdain for people who try and pull the wool over people's eyes. And quite frankly that is the only way a lib gets elected anything (outside of San Fran and the north east).
Besides I'd bet you a dollar to a donut, that this is a liberal kook. The feminist movement isn't based out of the right wing of the country. Nor is the feminist movement about woman. Or else they would have marched at the way Palin was treated...
But just so you know, my comment was a joke. I was just making fun of a woman for not understanding what happens when momma's got her boobs out...
But not stirring the pot, and to more sincerely answer the question, my grandparents had absolutely nothing, and neither did their brother's and sisters. And in watching and observing them, and seeing the results. There is little doubt what works and what doesn't. The people who espoused the conservative philosophy that "they were the ones responsible for their own actions." And would reap the rewards or consequences of those choices. Have been quite successful, financially and in their families. The ones that went the liberal way, oh it isn't my fault, I'm a product of my environment, and the other excuses. Well most of them failed. And have a whole host of problems. I'm not talking about how they voted. So to me it is very real. I can see very direct results.

How is this exactly a 'liberal thing'? What has making a statement that a woman's bre@sts are essentially no different to those of a man (except for the size and shape issue), have to do with liberal phiosophies? What 'wool' is this person trying to pull over your eyes? It's called equality. A person shouldn't have to be judged based on the aspects of their body. I can easily say it's the conservative-minded person that has stigmatized a woman's chest to be something that is repugnate to look at in public, based on their beliefs and values. Why is that? Who made the edict that in the US it's BAD to look at a woman's bare chest in public, but not a man's? I know plenty of women who would love nothing more than to be able to do yard work in 100 degree weather sans a top. Men do it all the time, and no one thinks anything of it. If a woman were to do it, she'd be labeled a $exual pervert and handed a ticket or arrested. That's called a Double Standard. That's not liberal thinking, that's logical thinking.
