I got a new fish last night. My girlfriend bought me a pearlscale butterfly. What an awesome fish. I named him Charley. But my blue hippo tang seems to chase him around a bit. Is this probably just cause he's new and getting to know the pecking order??

Fish are like a pack of dogs. Your new fish will need to learn its place. Tangs can be territorial so you will have to watch that the aggression does not intensify. For the next few days just keep an eye on the fish. Watch particularly at Charley's fins, because if the fighting gets out of hand Charley's fins will have some damage.

I have noticed that it's not so much they fight. It's more they just chase around a little. Charley was introduced to the tank thursday evening and is doing fine otherwise. He's eating the foods that I feed and is also grazibg on the rockwork. Everyone else is fine with him except that blue hippo chases him around a bit. The clowns chase evryone away when they get to close to their nest { which has a fresh batch off eggs right now } but thats understand able.
Thanks for looking and your input

My tank is a 90 gallon with about 100 lbs of fiji live rock. My blue hippo is about 4 to 4 1/2 inches. Also in this tank is a lawnmower blenny, a strawberry psuedo, a yellow tang about 3 inches, a pair of clowns, and of course my new pearlscale butterfly which is also about 4 inches. Also there is a cleaner crew of snails and crabs. All in all a very happy and healthy tank.
thanks again for the help
Jeff

at my lfs i've seen a strawberry dottyback rip chunck out of the yellow tang in the same tank
but that one was about 3 in. in length and the tang was just added

My stawberry psuedo is only about 1 1/2 inch and she's the mellowest fish in the tank. Never bothers anyone and keeps to herself most of the time. Also finds all the good hiding spots in the rockwork cause she's so small she can hide almost anywhere.
{ I live almost acrosss the street from the airport so I can watch the airshow from my backyard }
thanks for looking

Well it's been 5 nights now and my blue hippo has mellowed out a lot. Everyone has been getting along just fine now. They all get along as if they,ve been living togeather all thier lives.I guess my worries for nothing. Now that they all know their place in the pecking order there are no problems. I sure am glad I got my new pearlscale butterfly. what a wonderfull addition.
thanks for all the input and concern for my critters
Jeff
