I am in the process of building a new canopy, an extra tall one for my 125 I have one 250 watt M.H. lamp, some T-5s, and I will buy 2 more M.H. lamps (later) and 2 moon light (soon).
My question , do/should I stain the inside part of the canopy? Just not sure.

%% The one I bought is stained...I think to protect from water damage, it should be sealed some how.

thank you i was worried that it would be a fire hazard, finshed the frame just now and will begin the the outside covers 1/4 in plywood, then stain.
Thanks again, I will post that picture for you in the other thread when done.

Just staining it is really not going to do much. If you want to protect the wood from mildew and salt creep you will have to apply a wood sealer like a polyurethane. They do make these in water based formulas. It will just need to be fully cured before being exposed to moisture.

When I build canopies I paint the inside white with exterior latex paint, then a couple coats of polyurethane on top of that. You might as well reflect stray light back into the tank...

All most done with the sheet work of the canopy still need to drill some holes, put in the hooks for M.H. lamps and some other goodies.
i had white paint on the inside of my last canopy, that was built from plywood and too heavy. Now, Its made of a frame that I skinned with 1/4 sheet of oak.
Should I stain the outside with stain and paint the inside white with oil based paint ?????
NOTE :This time I wanted to use some sheets of polished alumanum in the back, sides, and front where I can fit it or Is that a no no ?

The aluminum will corrode if it comes into contact with any salt... and fast.
I would also use polyeurathane to coat the inside of your canopy. I put 3 coats on the stand I made because I alway get drops of water from something... wipes right off and never soaks in -- which is a big deal in untreated wood.
