Hey everyone, tomorro's my birthday and I told my parents to get me a sunpod 30''. I told them it would be my birthday/christmas present. I measured it with a tape measure and it definatly lights. UUMM.... the wrapping paper is also a little see through, so i know its a sunpod. Anyways my question for you guys is: I have a protien skimmer and a pump that both do a preety good job of adding circullation to the water, but do i need a powerhead or not??? and what does a protien skimmer really do???
thanks!!!

How many gallons is your tank? 20 long perhaps :D
I have a 20 long and i have a skimmer, and two powerheads, and a canister filter and still dont think I have enough flow....You'll be set if you just get one of the ones with the rotating head, it creates a good curent.
Protein skimmers are an essentail peice of equipment in reef aquarium keeping. The pull all the gunk out of your water be high pressure seperation. I think it removed mostly like the organic watse and stuff but if you have it set up properly look in your collection cup, and you'll know why it's there :)

Either it's still breaking in (Some skimmers take a week or two before really working), isn't set up correctly, or it needs to be adjusted.
The rate of skimming can go up and down, but unless you have absolutely nothing in your tank, literally, then you should at least periodically get some skimate.

Not being directly familiar with your particular type of skimmer, or any skimmer other than a RemoraPro, I can't comment, each seems to have its own particular adjustments. Most skimmers have a means of adjusting things like water flow, wetter vs drier skimming, and so forth. I would presume that such adjustments are explained in the manual.
If you don't have the manual, most are available from the manufacturer's website, usually in PDF format.
BTW, congrats on the lights, sounds like something you're really looking forward to.
