i puchased about 65 lbs of LR off craigslist for $120 got about 15 red mushrooms on diferent peices. anyway just got home tonight and looked in the tank and seen something hanging out of one of the rock and thought it was one of the aiptasia i treated earlier with joe juice but when i turned on the light there he was a worm about 6-7 inches he snaped back into the rock i could not get a picture of it. i removed the rock from the tank and placed it into a bucket of fresh water there are a few mushrooms on this peice how long can they and the rest of the good things survive in the fresh water? i want to leave the rock in the bucket over night. any and all advice is welcome thanks

Sounds like it could be a peanut worm, if so those are good hitchhikers

If you soaked the rock in fresh water over night- you killed everything on/in the rock including beneficial bacteria. Thoroughly rinse the rock before returning to the DT to avoid a spike. Next time do a super-salintiy soak. Soaking the rock in water with a salinity of 1.035-1.040. This will drive all hitchhikers out of the rock in search of better water without killing the beneficial bacteria, while allowing you to pick and choose which hikers you would like to keep.

just got home from work and checked the bucket nothing in it. the rock was only in the fresh water for about 20 min. then i changed the water to some from the DT was this long enough to kill everything in the rock? hope not.

If it was ro water you should be okay. If it was city water, you probably killed most of what was beneficial. If you can get a picture of the worm, that would help us out. Worms will typically come out at night. I would feed a little right before you turn off the lights.....wait about 30 minutes.....Have your camera.....turn on the light.....snap....you got em! Give it a whirl.

I would suggest keeping a close eye on your water params for the next couple days and have some salt water on hand in case of any spikes. its possible the worm died in the rock and could cause a spike.
if this rock came from a well established tank i would worry to much about negative hitch hikers. next time put it in a hypersalinity water like ole stated then there isnt any worry of killing off any thing.
