i was told by my lfs that butterflies would destroy my live rock by eating it too fast to re-grow. a few people on this site agreed. i'm trying to think of a replacement for the bf. would a fox face do the same damage?

Well, this is odd. I mean, butterflyfish eat various tube worms and things, but don't destroy the LR. IMO, it would be hard to have a butterfly without LR. Foxface eat some types of algae, but I wouldn't consider this destroying LR? The main use of LR, IMO, is in biological filtration (which neither fish will impact), habitat/hiding spots (which both fish will benefit from), and grazing opportunities (which is more natural for fish and may help them adjust to captivity...but means, I guess by some definition, that they are detroying the LR though this seems odd to me).

Yeah, It all hinges on one's particular definition of "destroyed". Butterflies and FoxFaces will graze on live rock.
