Yes your hermits will eat the snails if they need a bigger shell. You can get empty shells and just put them on your sand for your growing hermits to move to that should help.

Hermits will eat your snails if they need the shell or not. Especially blue legs.

Yes the hermit crabs will eat snails, I walked in on this happening just yesterday. The hermit had pulled the snail out of the shel and he ate him, I don't think he even took the shell.

I have never had a snail die from hermit attack. I have had a couple big turbos die from landing on their back and me not catching it.
I don't agree with the 1 per gallon rule - but then I only have 160watts of lighting right now and algae hasn't been a problem, and I feed my tank pretty well. I have 18 blues and only 1 scarlet with about a dozen snails. All have been in the tank together since march.
A couple of the blues are also very large.
Some ppl swear the blues are little terrorists but I have had no probs...
I think the bad press comes from a snail that dies and then the hermits do what they do best - clean up detrius. We see them attacking and assume they were the culprit.

Unlike jimi, I've had no bad experiences with the blues. After over three months, I have all 20 of the original snails I bought as a part of the SWF clean up crew. In fact, I think the blues are the best cleaners in the tank. I would, however put many spare shells of various shapes and sizes in the tank. The scarlets in particular seemed to appreciate this gesture.

BTW my scarlet never leaves the rock, ever. The blues do get down in the sand looking for goodies....and clean the mess made by my snowflake.
I agree about the extra shells, mine are always switching.

i wonder why swf would put such combination as invert package? .. especially sally light foot being agressive toward others sometimes and hermits eating turbo snails.

It makes money.
I only recommend scarlet hermits and mine come down every day to sift my sand, every creature has its own personality.

Thats exactly it. Burn is right, every creature has its own personality.
I saw Electric Blue hermits for sale at my LFS. I came here and did a search and everyone here said they were reef safe. I went to the pet store, and a customer there was saying that his was so destructive he had to get rid of it. And then, the LFS owner said that every once in a while, one will come along that will terrorize a reef tank. But its rare. And a customer was agreeing that they never hurt his reef, and he had 4.
So its just luck, as it is, it seems, with a lot of these salt water critters. lol
