Would it be possible to give back?

I was reading on the massive destruction of coral reefs since the 1950's on my lunch break and got to thinking.....
Would it be possible to take frags from our tanks and re transplant them to the coral reefs around the world? putting corals in their geographically correct locations?
Silly idea but would it work?
It would be cool to have a no harvest part of the ocean where people could lay down coral and come back years later to see it.
Just thinking out loud.....

Creating artificial reef habitat Good thing. Taking frags, or anything else from your tank and placing it in the ocean BAD.
I am not sure if there are any agencies or groups that are equipped to do that.

The typical response, is the fact that we typically have coral, or livestock from various parts of the world. and there is a real danger of introducing parasites or diseases other wise isolated to a new reef. Where they don't have the ability to fight it...

Zactly. The frags would need to be isolated and tested for disease and parasites that would be a potential time bomb if introduced into the wrong area.

Wow. Awesome point that I never even thought of.
I watched a show called Killer algae About Culapara (spelling?) and how its destroying parts of the Italian coastline. Its a menace to the ecology and was accidentally introduced by a scicentist dumping a few strands out of his window, which happened to overlook the coast.
I could see how coral frags could run amok with something the reef would not be able to combat naturally.
