Would this work?

Would it work to get a canister filter set it up in the tank and instead of running the return back to the tank, run it into a sump? From the sump get a pump and push it back into the Dt.
If the power was to go out, the canister would not continue to drain into the sump, am I correct?

Think so? I guess it wouldn't overflow if the sump was set up a little higher than the canister, right?

It will overflow if something hapens to your return pump. You really don't want a pump drawing water out of your display unless it is returning it right back to the display. If the loop is open anywhere along the way then you risk an overflow.
The best way to draw water from your display is with a gravity/overflow system. That way if something happens to your return pump, the flow out of your display will automatically stop.
