Would two 175MH be good enough for 100gal?

I'm thinking of adding in my MH light soon would 2X175 Watt be enough for 100gal follow by 4 VHO bulbs?

That would be aminium for soft corals, would go for 250 watts to make those corals happy and if u ver want a clam or SPS

4 VHOs + 2 175s should be fine for a 100 gallon. You could upgrade to 250s but I dont think that would be necessary.

What are you going to hold? Softies? If so ya, thats fine, but if your going SPS or Clams 250W MH i woud go with

Well I was thinking of 175 since my canopy isn't that high so I won't have too much of a heat problem but I know I would want more light if I'm gonna get sps and calms.

For the price difference I would get the 250's. I have two 250's and 2 110 watt Actinic over my 55 gal. Come call it overboard but the clams love it and I haven't lost one coral. It was like an extra 75 bucks to upgrade to the 250's.

What are the dimensions of the 100? What corals are you gonna want to have. Also you can run some fans to help with heat.

My tank dimension is about 61LX26HX17W. I'm gonna keep mostly soft and sps corals. Yeah the 250w seems like good route to go with as well.

Yeah if it's 26" deep you'll kick yourself if you don't get 250's. You probably don't need the 4 VHO's though. 2 actinics or something would be fine. Neotrin, how do you deal with the heat produced that a tank that small? How high are your MH's above the water surface?

I'd run 3X250w MH's. Actually with a tank that deep I'd almost be tempted to run 400w MH's if you want to have high light acropora's.

My 2 - 250's and 2 110 actinics are hung 12 inches above the tank. To be truthful it is a hood system with the UV glass. I dont get any heat on the tank actually. I have two fans built into the system and I haven't had any heat issues. It stays at a constant 78-80 degrees...mind you I dont ever see my heater come on...so I am sure the lights are keeping it at this temp. Then say 18-26 inches you can do 250's. If you don't plan on keeping clams or a lot of hards then the 250's are fine. You can still have them they will just need to placed high in the aquarium. I would send you a pic of how mine is set up...but my cam is on loan to a friend. I will try and get one soon though.

When I had a 100 gallon I had 2 175's on it. And I had SPS and clams:eek:
Of corse it was 60"X22"X18".
DO NOT GO BY WPG. It will mislead you. Go by your height. 24" and over I would go with the 250's. Only 2 at that. MH will cover 24" to 30" area. If you put that 3rd MH in the center, you will end up with a nice shadow of it in the middle of your tank.

I've heard of studies coming out that it isn't just the wattage but also the reflectors. Having good mirror reflector angles means more light to the bottom.

I have 2X175W MH and 2X55W PC and have clams and SPS.
24" tank with 2" sandbed.
What's your basis for stating that it would be a minimum for soft corals?

MY basis for it being a minimum for soft coral....Well it wouldn't be a minium but a good amount, but i waws saying if he wanted SPS he'd probly want 250W MH....The more light the beter your corals grow and live....I think and a 100 gallon tank is deeper and wider than a 24" in tank...I think, you really didn't provide specs..So i would go with 250 MH lights....IMO

I would go with 250 also. His tank is deeper. And like mentioned early for the price difference I rather have a little more just in case he decides to get a clam or SPS. Better be safe then sorry.
That is my 2 cents
