I haven't fraged zenia yet but I was told when I did to cut it at the base of one of the stalks with a sharp razor. put the coral and the frag in a tupperware bowl with some of your tank water for about 30 min until it calms down. Then either put the frag in a smaller bowl with some sand or glue it to a piece of rock and place it in your tank. the other piece you can just put back in your tank where you picked it from. that is what I was told to do.

You can cut it at the base but it will most likely grow back from the stub thats still there. I dont know if your trying to control the spread, or just want a frag. Best to try to pull it off by getting up under the base and remove the whole stalk to control it....just lightly rubberband ( is best IMO ) the stalk to a small rock and place it were it can recover, they normally attach in a few days and then you can remove the rubber band.

If it's xenia elongata, I just grab the entire stalk and pull it at an angle. The entire xenia will come right off and not leave a trace of extra tissue behind. It'll look in pretty bad shape and all shriveled up from being squeezed, but it'll puff back up in an hour or two.

Im not sure what the scientific name is but its the brown waving, im asuming its the same, the method you describe sounds primitive but hopefully effective, I dont care about the smell on my fingers! LOL Thanx all! THIS IS GETTING OUT OF CONTROL!

yep, thats elongated...grab hard at the bottom of an outer stalk and pull in the opposite direction its growing, back toward the center. If the rock is not secure, it could move too...just remember that whole coral thats connected will come off. After its out you can cut it up.

I just fragged mine out too. What I did was place a small piece of rubble rock next to the stalks that I wanted to move out, actually touching the stalks. Within a week or so, they had moved over to the rubble and I was able to harvest out the ones that I wanted to. I thought it went rather nicely that way.

Thats the white POM POM, pulses the most, grows the slowest and IMO, the least hardy. Likes LOW water flow and high light!

Just cut it low on the stalk with a pair of sharp scissors. It won't injure that coral and you can grow the frags on pieces of rock to sell or trade. There are instructions on xenia fragging in the Archives.

I purged my xenia as it was beginning to take over my tank as well. I took the rock out it was consuming and chipped it off with a hammer and chisel. I kept one small piece to restart and make sure I don't let this one spread to neighboring rocks.
It used to be my favorite coral, but now I consider it more of a plague!

Bone, anytime you want to throw some my way.... I just cant seem to keep it alive. No matter what I do, i just havent found out why it doesnt survive in my tank.

Mine was a gift from a rather sketchy reefer... any ways. I didnt know it was called White Pom Pom untill now, but unlike the rest of the xenia family it seems to grow pretty slowly. I have no trouble keeping it under control and have actually been trying to grow MORE of it. Its beautiful, and EXCELLENT for my small 20gal system. I just really want to try some stony corals... so far ive done well with the xenia, shrooms, zoos and I also have a VERY small frag of green star that im trying to grow. I really want to try a stony or two tho. My first attempt was green hammer, but my camel back ate it!
Any ways, White Pom Pom Xenia rocks (now that I know what it is) IMO.

Good question, do i need to do a water change, or will my charcoal and skimmer get it out?
