Xenia refugium

I am thinking about setting up a xenia refugium. I have a small above tank refugium, I recently removed all the macro (for reasons to lengthy to explain here). I was going to get some more to set it back up but I am hearing things about a xenia refugium, could someone perhaps go into more detail about how this works or is it just as simple as putting xenia in refugium. One question I have is will the pod population still thrive in this type of refugium as long as I have LR in it. The other question is that in a macro fuge you remove the algae to remove the nutrients, with xenia I am assuming the coral just consumes it and that is it.
Any help or brainstorms you might have would be great. Also any suggestions on lighting for a tank that is 16"L x 8"W x 12"tall, which would support the xenia.
Thanks, Carla
