something is happening to my xenia. all water parameters are good. its turining all shrieveld up and the base is like purple. i recently tossed some calcium into the tank. some of which might have landed directly on it. is this like a burn effect.?? i have another stock of it like 2 inches away and its still beutifull. anyone got any ideas befor i lose it?

On the contrary, they do better with some nitrates, thats why you hear them thriving in "dirty" tanks with slightly higher nitrate levels. Like mine! lol

its most likley a chemical; burn from the calcium, there is a reason why the directions say "do not mix directly into aquarium"
as for xenia liking nitrates, thats not entirely true they actually consume more ammonia nitrogen and nitrite than nitrate, the reason they do better in high nitrate tanks is the amount of ammonia nitrogen and nitrite are more abundant and not a direct result of the excess nitrate.

I have soooooo much xenia in both my tanks that i get store credit every month to buy my salt and other supplies and my nitrates run about 10.
I agree that its the calcium, you should always mix it with water and put it in your sump, slowly, never directly into your DT.

there is a chance, I have have seen xenia melt all the way back to the base then regrow. its hit or miss at this point.

Check you SG level.
my beginner's lack of experience stage killed my 1st Xenia cuz I didnt' have the right equipment to check on SG level at 1.030.
Speaking of SG, if you use those cheapo Hydrometer, chances are your tank's SG is rocket high now, but you don't know. Use the refractormeter.
