my dad got a new fish tank and he got an xenia... i think is how you spell that, by uh, e does not know how to take care of it. Does he need to get a specific light? He also has brown stuff, algea I think, growing on his sand and part of his rocks, is that a good or bad sign?

Hi, welcome to the site. We don't know how to help you unless you give us some more information. So go through the following list and answer them one by one by number. Xenia is easy to care for but we need info from you to continue.
1. When was this tank set up and what size is it?
2. Do you have your own test kits and what brand?
3. What are the results of the water tests?
4. Do you have power heads, what brand?
5. What type of filter do you have?
6. What type of light do you have on the tank?
7. How much rock is in the tank and what type of sand?
8. Is there anything in the tank besides the Xenia?
9. List the livestock.

Indicative from the brown algae, it sounds like it is a new aquarium. As Flower asked, how long has it been set up and what kind of lights are you currently using on the tank?
