Xenias not lookin so great

I have a couple of Xenia colonies in my tank and they have not opened up in the last couple of days. All other corals are thriving. Kinda wierd that only the xenia is having problems. I thought that they were hardier corals than most. Any clues?

The xenias are mostly located in the lower middle to middle section of the tank. Some have medium current and others have low. They have been in the tank for about three months.

Sorry for the long delay. I was trying to do some resurch on candy corals.
Not much luck though.
I would move them away for now until someone gives better advice.
Sounds like something has stung the Xenias to me.
Just a guess though, sorry

Not that this answers your question...but xenias can be a sort of early warning system. They are normally the first to respond/react to changes in water chemistry. When is the last time you checked your nitrate...or PH levels. Is it possibly that you've had a slight increase in ammonia? I can usually tell when something is slightly off just from the way the xenia appear.

NM is right about the using Xenia as an early warning system. There are a few things that come to my mind though.
1) Candy Cane is sending out feelers and is stinging the Xenia. Is the CC a recent addition, or has it been growing?
2) My Xenia closes up every now and then for no reason. I'll check my params and nothing is out of whack. Then all of a sudden it's fully open and grabbing. *shrug* It's almost as if they have some cycle.
3) Somethings bad in the water. Watch the Xenia's base closely to see if it's 'smoking' and check your params.

Our Xenias were looking bad last week but our water tested ok. We did a 10% water change on Saturday and they perked up almost instantly. This morning they were completely back to normal. Must have been a buildup of some chemical in the water that is not normally tested.:)

I thought the same thing about the candy coral but it has been in the tank for a while and growing. Besides that, there is only one colony of xenia next to some CC. All of my xenia are limp. I have checked all of my parameters again and again to come to the same conculusion......my xenias are just jealous of the extra care and attention I have been giving to other corals. :D I have always taken the xenia for granted due to its hardiness......i,m sorry xenia. I will give you the attention that you deserve.:p

see, it has always been my understanding that xenias werent that easy to care for, but i have three xenia colonies in my 20 gallon tank , and two of them closed up one day, were like this for several weeks, while all my params were normal, and about a week ago, finally started perkign back up again. i just dont know what to make of it. i agree with tjkohler, that if they close up and then begin sliming a brownish color, id pull them out cause your sore than likely going to lose them.
dad, as for mushrooms and xenia, i have one colony that is smack dab in the middle of about 7 shrooms, all of which touch there base, and it is still doing fine. this same colony was also being touched by some yellow zooanthid polyps that seemed to have no effect on it. these yellow zooanthids were at one time stinging my moon coral.!!! MAybe these are just tough little @$$ES!
good luck
