Try changing your water more often, most of us average about 3-4 weeks not months. And then smaller amounts like 25%. The color should stay truer when it's cleaner, but it may take a few changes to get it all cleaned up.

thats a long time between water changes.....every 2-3 weeks.is when it should be done.also use good quality salt for your tank.[

YOu just mentioned not to take more than 30 percent at one time or the bio filter will be useless. Well, i take almost 50 percent out every four weeks, and so far no problems. The fish afterwards seem so active and seem to thrive in the refreshed water. But 1/2 removal is too much?

The theory behind smaller water changes is to not change the makeup of the tanks water so dramatically that it will stress your fish. ( for example my kh and pH of the water I use is much different than the treated water in my tank) . Some fish (not inverts or corals) are hardy enough to stand 50% if the water isn't any different,(which is highly unlikely) but not recommended. I do not understand at all why RR says the amount changed has a direct effect on the bio-filter. Perhaps he will explain it to us.????????????
