yeah I'd take it out since there's nothing to eat it .. but yeah .. I've been in this hobby for years, have three tanks, (a 65, 90, and a 210 gallon) and I'm still giddy about stocking my 65 gallon ..

Take the shrimp out. :scared:
Your ammonia should drop and you should see your nitrite begin to rise. Next your nitrite will fall and your nitrate will rise.
You will need to do some weekly water changes to reduce the nitrates. 15% changes of your tank volume twice a week until you see 20 or below nitrates.
You may have at least 2 or 3 weeks to go.
Do you have live rock in your tank? This is, IMO, essential to cycling your tank and promoting the beneficial critters that you so want to see!
The pods you are wanting to see are not easily seen, even when they are abundant in a healthy, established tank. It takes time and you will not see them while your tank is cycling.
Everything in this hobby takes time. Everything in this hobby also requires that you look down the road about as far as you can see!

not a major rise but a small rise

you don't really need to do a water change during the cycle .. wait untill the cycle is done

Yes, the shrimp is a way to get the cycle started. But you don't want anything to actually decay in there.
Until you see 0 ammonia and 0 Nitrite, you should not change water. It delays the cycle completing itself.
Once those are at 0, you will have nitrates and then you can change some water. IMO nitrates between 0 and 20 are acceptable. A little higher won't hurt.
Regular, weekly water changes after your tank has cycled are a must.
And do add water when you have evaporation.

I am cycling my 55gal with 60lbs of LR I orderd off the big auction site, and I through in a few good size pieces of LR from my 10gal that has been running for over 3 years now. There are hundreds of them in there now. It has only been cycling for about 3 weeks. My cycle is finished, but I just bought a house last week and will be closing on it sept 25. So, I am going to just let it sit until then. Anywho, If you can get some LR from a well established tank, you will have plenty of pods.

i disagree. you should maintain your ammonia level, don't let it get out of control. I like to tell people to do water changes to keep it below 1.0, 0.5 being ideal. This allows your tank to properly cycle, without killing EVERYTHING on your LR. I made the mistake of not doing water changes on 90lbs of LR in my 55g tank... nothing survived. IT kinda sucked because i was so excited to find new critters and whatnot, but that didn't happen. JMO
