Yellow Tang and Cleaner Shrimp Problem

Has anyone ever had their Tang bite the tentacles off the Cleaner Shrimp? Mine had long beautiful tentacles and one day they were short and stubby. I wasn't sure what happened to them until I actually saw my Tang biting them!! The Cleaner shrimp now runs from him! :notsure:

Sorry but can't say I've had the same problem
. We have 3 yellow tangs w/ 2 cleaner shrimp and a fire shrimp. Have not had a problem w/ them all being together.

I've never had a problem before. Just very strange. The tang acts like he hates the antennas. Poor shrimp runs when every time he sees the Tang.

my CBS (little more agressive than a cleaner I guess =P) attacks my fish. They all avoid him like crazy.

yes! this happened to me exactly!!
the dam YT ate the antennae off of the cleaner shrimp, mated pair of CB's, and a camel back shrimp!! they all died soon after because of stress!
i got rid of the YT ASAP , and i now hate them because of this.... i will never have a YT ever again!

Mine too. He can be very aggressive sometimes

what kind of tang?

WOW!! I have a rogue Tang! My Cleaner Shrimp thankfully hasn't died from stress, but he does run and I mean run when the Tang comes after him. He hides out now in the day and only comes out at night. :scared: Poor Baby, his name is Nosey because he was very Nosey; until now.
THEN Lemonysnicketts the Yellow Tang struck! All my fish are named.. LOL

I haven't had that happen to mine before. My shrimp cleans it often actually. But i have heard this happen to other people before, and i'm afraid there's nothing you could do about it except seperate tanks.

Same here with the YT, I had a purple reef safe lobster and was wondering why he didnt come out alot, well one morning i watched as the purple lobster ventured out into the middle of the tank, to find a YT dive bombing on his little legs and antenna... :scared: I was shocked and of course he killed the thing, still have the YT today but alot less aggressive. :jumping: I know friends who have their YTs in aggressive fish tanks and they hold there own!!! :happyfish

I am sooo surprised by this, I always thought Yellow Tangs were peaceful. He is getting pretty big though. Maybe that has something to do with it? The bigger they get the more agressive?

YT's are easily one of the most aggressive tangs. in fact, if you get a really mean one, they will start using their barb to cut up and all of the tank mates, and beat them into submission!

Their is a lot of love between my blue regal and cleaner shrimps. I think they would mate if possible. The tang loves the neon gobies also. Soemetimes the tang will be swimming along with a neon attached.

Thanks everyone for the stories and knowledge. I'll keep an eye on him and if he gets any worse or picks on anyone else. OFF he goes!!!!!!

My YT did the same.. in the beg.. Now he apprecaites the shrimp :)
BUT when the shrimp doesnt clean him when he wants to be cleaned he has picked - the antenea.. When the shrimp sheds the tenticals will be long again. Thats what happened w/ mine at least.
