Yellow Tang with Bad Pop Eye

Hello All
I need some advice from u guys. My yellow Tang has a recurring problem of pop eye but this time round it has persist for much longer than it should.
It occurred 2 1/2 weeks ago with a slight pop eye and I started to to treat the water with 'AQUMEDI QUIT ICK' for a week but that did not help. At the same time, it developed cloudiness in the eye as well.
I switched medication to 'WATERLIFE MYXAZIN' (this medication has helped the Tang to get rid of the pop eye the last few times) and has been using it for a week already. The pop eye got worse. The cloudiness in the eye has turn Blood red.
The last few times when my yellow tang developed this systom, my 2 cleaner shrimps had played a great role in getting rid of the parasite on it. But this time round, I think I lose the 2 guys in the midst of the AQUMEDI medication.
The pop eye disease has never affected my other fishes such as a Blue Tang and 3 clown fishes.
I am afraid I might lose my Yellow Tang. Can u guys tell me how to help my Tang get rid if its disease.
Million Thanks.

Yes that's a very serious problem how often has he caught the pop eye desease in the last few months? you might want to try some saltwater copper safe and see what that will do. I'll check my logs and see if i have anything on reacurring pop eye on a yellow tang and i'll also ask some people in the morning and i'll get back to you tomorrow evening.

well did some checking and asking and the thing that came up most for an continuess popeye break out was ammonia and stress. How much do you feed your fish? one source said to try and cut down on the feeding. and a water change won't hurt any either. well good luck

How does your fish act in the tank? Eating, swimming? Tangs are grazers and basically need to be given what is needed to graze all day. Does your tank environment do that for him? What is the diet of this fish? Is it showing signs of HLLE?

Hi guys
I have have done a major water change 75% of it.
The Tang seems to be acting normal grazing as usual n eating normally as well. But I can see that the redness n the pop eye is affecting it a little.
I read somewhere that probably the fastest way to kill the parasite off the fish is to take it out for a freshwater bath with Malachite Green. It works by causing their skin mucus to develop something that causes the parasites to drop off the fish and then that can be killed by the ozonizer or UV.
Can anyone verify on this or there is a better way?

What type of lighting do you have? How long do you leave your lights on? Do you turn off the light during night time. Because I had that problem before about the eye pop out because my light was off about a week. I thought is a disease, when I told to my uncle about this problem he told me that there is not enough nutrients and if you leave you lights off about three to a week this might have cause the problem. Then when I leave my lights on back during night a new blue lights and during the day both lights are on about three to four day my tang's eye went back to normal. Try!!!
Good Luck!!!!!

wow, this is quite an old thread. Dana, for future reference, always start your own thread if you have a question or a problem. None of the people who posted about this back in 2002 are here any longer, besides Beth.
However, now that you have posted, I will try to provide you with help.
This is definitely not just a lighting issue. No two ways about it.
First and foremost, you should not have 4 tangs in a 55 gallon tank. That is way overstocked because tangs need much more swimming space. They easily stress in such a small tank. Sorry, but it is the truth. I'm sure you did not know, and your maintenance person probably just wanted you to spend more money. The first thing I would do is fire your tank maintenance person and take care of the tank yourself. Trust me, the tank will be a lot better and healthier if you are giving it personalized attention. Unless you have a rare, caring aquarium maintenance person, you just need to get out of that. Most of those people know hardly ANYTHING about aquarium maintenance. I am not making generalizations here. I have dealt with many of them in LFS', and I find it really sad that people actually trust them to take care of their fish tanks.
Now onto your problem. The first thing I need from you is your water parameters. I need to know what your pH, kH(alkalinity), ammonia, nitrite, nitrates, salinity, and temperature are.
Also, it would be very helpful if you told me how your tank maintenance worker did your water change. Did he make up the water 48 hours before the water change so the worker could mix properly? Did he heat it to the EXACT same temperature and make it to the EXACT same salinity as your main tank? If not, this most likely caused your major problems. However, still post your water parameters so I can help you get this in order.
