Yellow Tang

well as long as the tanks bioload isn't too large it would be fine in a smaller tank ie. 55 gallon. With a yellow in a 55 you would not have much room left for other fish...maybe a couple small clowns or firefish or something.
Gallons DO matter but as long as your tanks load isn't too great it would fit fine in a 55. Make sure the cleanup crew is up to far and keep up on regular water changes and use a skimmer.
The 4 foot is a necessity for a yellow tang....ANY tang for that matter....they like to swim and even though 3 feet and 4 feet is not much of a difference, a tang looks really cramped and uncomfortable in anything less then a 4 foot...
so gallons do matter....length of tank is important as well.

But in other words...if you don't overstock...any 4 foot tank will usually have enough water. And a 4 foot 55 would be better than a larger, but more square tank.

To some degree that's what I'm saying....you could make a 4 foot tank that is only 20 gallons if it were built really short and narrow...that would not be a good enough tank with the 4 foot length..Anything above a 50-55 gallon that is 4+ would be good for a yellow tang IMO. I would not want under 50 gallons of water. I had one in a 38 temporarily and he did not enjoy it, you could tell.
And yes, I'd rather a 4 foot tank then saying a large cube tank.

I had mine in a 44 gal pentigon, I think it severely stunted his growth and his fins seem to be perminantly scarred. I recently got a 50 gal 4' long tank and he seems to be loving it, so defiantly get a long tank if you get a tang. Its better for them, and much more fun to watch. - and dont give in to the peer pressure of friends wanting you to have 100 fish in a tank.

I am very close to my bioload limit...maybe even over it, but my water params are always good, the fish are active, healthy, and seem happy, no major cases of ich(if any), and I am getting ready to build a stand for a 75 I bought. As for the ich...once in a while my Hippo scratches...but then he hangs out near my cleaner shrimp and is fine again.
