Actually I have all sorts of caves. I have a unique type of rock that I use, that allows for animals to hide in it.
Hopefully this picture gives you an idea.
Its cool though, my eel has 3 or 4 really good hiding places that he just loves to stick his head out of.

well , live rock usually naturally creates lots of great caves, but usually for the BREs require special caves just for them, which is why people have tried burying PVC. just trying to help, i dont know much about eels.

What do they do in the ocean?

I'm VERY lucky, we had gone I believe 22 days without eatting. - I honestly figured him for dead. - Last night ...he just decided to eat silver slides. - I was SO happy!

Thank you for the comment.
I'm going to keep my fingers crossed. - I have a couple friends who work for public aquariums, one suggested now that hes eating not to attempt to feed him again for a week or so, because he could get gut rot. So I guess next tuesday we'll find out if he is still a hungry man.

Lets hope so! :)

The blue ribbon eel is a very beautiful addition to your aquarium. I have a 150 gallon aggressive setup with an angel, wrasses, triggers, and damsels. My local saltwater store has a blue ribbon that they have had on hold for me for about three weeks now. I go in there a few times a week to see if he has eaten yet and they keep telling me no. We have been trying to feed him live saltwater ghost shrimp. Yesterday he thought about eating one and then moved away. I'm really happy for you that your eel finally started eating. It seems that if you can get them to eat they will live a long life in your aquarium. It took my zebra moray three weeks before he eat a live crawfish.

Yeah it was really scary, I'm so happy he is eating, when I bought him, I did so without researching him completely. - I am an "Advanced" aquarist as some would say. - I should have known better to research his eating habbits. - I guess on this one either my set up was just right, or I got lucky.
I'm thinking its a bit of both, but honestly I would not suggest this eel for anyone. - Beautiful addition yes...but worth killing how many to have one as a pet? - Not at all.
If I had been inexperianced, not had the water quality I have, the space...etc. - I'm sure he would have died in another tank.
Based on all said, Unless you've seen this animal EAT in the store.... dont buy it.
Not worth killing the eel, or loosing the 100 bucks.

angler,
It hasn't touched any of my verts or snails. - Not yet anyways. - I dont believe it will be an issue though...
I wouldn't suggest one, they are VERY hard to keep. - I have what many would call an " Advanced " set up, and I have been in the hobby for many years. - This animal requires special attention, and quality conditions.
I love him, but I wouldn't suggest him for the average hobbiest.
I believe he needs a 60 gallon tank, but I think thats a bit small. IMO

After I saw your post, it dawned on me that I'd seen a post regarding set up for blue ribbon eels (I love them, but sadly can't have them because of space restraints). So, anyway, here's a link to another post from a while back on someone who set his tank up with the pvc pipe as previously mentioned...very cool. Best of luck with keeping your bre.
