I lived in Key West for a long time so I understand the need for a huricane kit. I got a power converter from home depot. It could hook to a car battery and then has an outlet with seven plugs on it. I would keep two back up car batterys and with this converter I could run the neccesities for a week easily. The converster is about $ 130.00 and the batteries can be from $ 30.00 and up. IThe money is worth it when you consider what you have and your bond with your tank.

I live an hour north of austin right next to killeen fort hood area and they are telling us that we should be prepared for power outages too. I do have 1 power inverter, but it only has 1 or 2 outlets. if it comes down to it, ill point my modded mj at the surface and run it off a car battery.

Ideally, you would want a small generator so that you could keep all of the equipment up and running. But use whatever you can find. The lights are not that important, but keeping the temperature down is. Also, you need to keep some flow going.

You know all week I have been concern about me and my family safety and all that, but just now when my brother came into my room that it hit me. He ask me what I was going to do about my fishes and now I m like

I dont have a generator or anything close to it. I just hope I dont loose my fishes.

I live in Ohio and we had hurricane level 1 winds last Sunday. The school was out of power for 5 days. I was concerned because I just gave a tankful of freshwater fish to my son's class for the classroom fish tank. (Making room for my second saltwater tank) Anyhow, when school resumed 5 days later, we went to the school for a search and rescue and the tank looked awesome. I couldn't believe it! I know salt is very different but I was amazed! Even though it was a new tank we seeded it well with our established tank. I think that helped a lot!

welcome to my world. I just got power back after 8 days from IKE blowing through and causing extensive damage here in Houston. I had to transport all my critters in a 10 gallon aquarium to Dallas for a couple of weeks. All in all, i only lost 2 astria snails. So i would say I made out pretty well.

I actually did purchase a generator before the storm even though I just moved to Houston about 6 weeks ago. The problem was that there was no way to get gas for the generator once the storm approached. Lesson learned though, I will make sure I have plenty of gas on hand BEFORE any storm next time.
