Here it is minus the doors and bottom trim. So how did I do for my first woodwork project? Still got to put the doors on and then it's time for the canopy. I will be glad to get rid of the hidious 2x4 box thing on the top of my tank.

Sweet!
I am looking at building a "case" around my metal stand. I wanna build it so that there is a six to eight inch lip/table surface in front of the tank. When money allows..................

The stand in the picture cost less than 250. That's taking into consideration I have enough materials left to make the canopy also. In all honesty you would be out no more money to just make a new stand. We done a 95 gallon last week out of one sheet of oak plywood. Lowes sales 3/4 inch Oak for about 40 bucks a sheet, your molding is up to you. All the molding for mine was about 75 bucks. I have some more stuff to trim the bottom, doors and canopy.
If I can do this anyone can. I am not very good with wood work and this was easy. All you need is a friend to let you use a table saw and a 15 dollar miter box from wally world. The same stand with just wood and no trim was $400 at petsmart. Not to mention my sump wouldn't fit into the petsmart stand.

Can you post your plans/ layout by any chance. I am thinking about building my stand too. (on a budget) Anyway, I need some more ideas. I'm stuck on the door part too, whatcha gonna do? I didn't realize miter boxes were only $15, awesome, I can have nice corners now!

I used a miter box on my first stand. And when i did my 125 gallon stand I broke down and bought a $90.00 compound miter saw at lowes. It worked so much nicer because I could shave the trim down a tiny bit at a time until the trim fit perfectly. I figured that since I saved hundreds on the stand and canopy the least I could do is buy one tool that I needed. I f you plan on useing the miter box on oak you will spend a ton of time sawing if you don't get the trim perfect your first measurment.

As far as posting plans for the stand, i can scan it for you but it was a box srawn on back of paper from work with alot of marks. I can help you if you need help but it's mainly draw box write measurements and notes and start cutting.
My doors are currently rectangular and untouched. I cut them out but I have yet to decide what to do with them. I have thought of carving a fish into them. I am just unsure if me carving a fish would turn out to look like a spiny urchin.
And yes wally world has 8 and 15 dollar miter boxes with saw. They are plastic and they are cheap. However 45 degrees is 45 degrees no matter how much you paid for it.

don't worry about the plans, sounds like a lot of trouble. My dad owned a cabinet shop and has been making cabinets (kitchen and bath) for his entire life, so I 'm gonna see if he has some free time to help me out. If not, I guess I'm headed to walmart!
