the fish is called a dolphin fish, Mahi Mahi, or Dorado. It depends where you're from, but it's a fish.
The little one in the picture above is a small female. The males have a big round forehead. These fish are beautiful! And they are very very great to eat. I must tell you, I don't eat fish normally, but I will eat Dorado, & Wahoo. YUMMY

I'm more of a freshwater kinda guy (go figure, living in the ocean state, and all) I personally like standing in a stream, up to my waist, swaying my fly rod back and forth... If I'm not doing that, it's FW bass fishing all the way!!! Always use lures, I dont see a need to kill one fish, to catch another, and let it go again

now, just a little fyi for those who claim to be sportmen... consrvationists......... and lovers of fish
I refuse to fish for, support the catching of, or purchase any bill fish at all. They are in strong need of help, which will take us years, probably even decades.
Many of these great creatures dont live long enough to reproduce because of our constant fishing and just purchasing it supports their demise. Many fo these fish take decades to become old enough to reproduce and killing them kills any possible future generations at the same time. For example, the blue marlin does not reach maturity and obligately change ---(to female) until they are(dont quote me to the year, but...) something like 70 or 80 yrs old. Most are males and until they are given a chance, they will never become female and thus hasten their demise.
sure, i support catch and release but myself i wont fish them because i am affraid I wont put them back, or may overplay them and risk their welfare just the same.
anyhow, although very tasty, please do not eat or kill billfish........ or at least listen to what I have to say and research a little more and then make your own educated decision, before killing off such a beautiful adn great animal.
I have one workd for all you great anglers out there and all you strong fish eaters out there
mahi-mahi.......... tastes jsut as good as sword, fight is unbelievable.... AND it is the fastest growing fish in the oceanS. enjoy them for several years If we all do, maybe teh bills can get a 2d chance. MAYBE.

fshhub- I'm w/ you... Somewhat. I love catching billfish. I practice ONLY C&R w/ these fish. Dolphin? Different story! I have turned back at least 30 sailfish and 3 Blue Marlin in my days. Never caught any other billfish. My records from the past 3 years show that 4 of my last 12 tagged have been caught at least once. Those are the ones that were actually called in. One that I caught by Bimini last March was caught up in NC this winter. There are codes (kinda like bar-codes) that you can jot down and call them in. I guess it is for research purposes. I tag all of my big catches and ALL of my billfish. The smallest sail I caught was about 30 lbs. It was the cutest little thing. I was hoping I'd hear back from that one. I think my code is 2424-54, or something like that. Have you ever heard of this? I'm trying to look up some more info on it. It's a pretty cool little program.

I would love to go deep sea fishing, we just never get around to it when we are on vacation. I would defineltly have to release a big fish like that. (like I would catch something like that anyway). I release the trout becasue we aren't fish eaters and usually when we go trout fishing its "catch and release" season.

Fishhub, I was not aware of the marlin's info. Thanks. Amazing how they can live so long.

My father's co-worker caught a Blue Marlin that was tagged around the west shores of Africa. Pretty crazy! He took a pic of it, it was huge. I think it was about 17 ft long!!

that 17 footer was at lest 150 yrs old, if i had to guess i would say prob 160 or a lil more.
i stongely support c&r and tagging, i am just affraid i would not be able to do the right thing, once i got a 12 footer or so iin my hands.
as for food, i love fish, BUT i only kill what i will eat, NO more! If you like it, eat up, if not return them. AND please everyone only kill what you intend to eat.
