It wasn't full grown, at only 1' in length. Zebras will reach lengths of 3' - 4'...sometimes larger.
Sounds to me that the fish store was telling you it was already full grown just to make some money.

I dont see how you could look at any eel not knowing the species and say it is full grown.Sounds like your hoping its full grown when it could be a juvinile fimbrated.Can you post pics or give a better description?Saying its full grown doesnt make sense to me if you dont even know the species its not like it has a full beard and a cane it is swimming around with.
