I have a zenia and colt corals in my tank. For the past 3 weeks the colt coral has started to shrink and close up. He was almost 12" tall now he is about 3". The zenias looks like it is loosing lts flowers. These are the only two coral that i am having a problem with.
water params.
ph 8.2
alk 8
trate 0
trites 0
phos 0
temp 77-78 cooled by a chiller
All the other coral have new growth on them and are doing very well it is just these 2 coral, an they are on opposite side of the tank from each other. The guy from the salt water store that i go to said that i might have to much flow in the tank. I have 3 1200 maxi jets with the 1600 upgrade on them and a 1500 seio. Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be happing?

it needs food! i cannot keep xenia on my 300 gallon but on my skimmerless tank it is thriving same thing with colt its not growing because my tank is too clean . soft corals needs a decent amount of nitrate to thrive.i notice that in 6 years i been involve with this hobby.

The only reason a Xenia would lose its "flower" is if something is eating it. If that same something is pestering your colt coral, it would not want to extend. When Xenia is dying it just closes up the heads into balls/little fists and shrinks to nothing, it does not lose the heads.
If the head is missing it is being eaten.

I think that is what is happening. I saw just for a second today my hippo swim by it and nip at it

It is rare, but I too have had a Hippo tang grow a taste for corals. I gave him to the LFS for another fish. I gave him warning it ate coral...he thought that the fish must have been eating algae trapped and didn't believe me, but traded fish anyway...on next visit he he informed me it did eat coral...
