zoa mutation!?

I had a piece of green/red zoa rock covered with zoa, I break it into 2 pieces so I can fit them both in a caved area on my LR formation.
after 3-4 months, the zoa on 1 piece of the rock start to turn brown and grow extremely large (no new zo, just old one become large) and the other one stay the same and start to spread out (2 rocks are right next to each other)
just wondering, is that because they had different water flow/light/etc?
anything I could do to reverse the effect?
thanks!

Exactly
Generally zoas/palys will grow bigger with less light and less flow.
