Zoa Problem!!!

In need of a little help......
some info first.
55G, 110 lbs lr, 100 lbs ls, 260 watts PC, the tank has been up and running for about 10 months now.
Now the problem>>> Zoas keep disappering (dying) I have tested all areas. Amonia 0, Nitrate 0, Nitrite 0, phosphate 0, KH 12 (high), CA 500 (also high), SG 1.025, temp 81. They are up high on the rock for max light exposure. I keep loosing them a little at a time. I have a clown, yellow shrimp goby, bi-color blenny, six line, 2 fire shrimp, and some hermits. My LFS (I love this place) is at a loss as am I. so I thought I would reach out and see if anyone has any ideas?

Sounds like you might have zoa eating nudis. They are very difficult to see and take on the color of the zoa they are feeding on. Very common problem once they are introduced to a tank and difficult to get rid of, but with dilligence they can be rid of. Check here for what to look for. Especially at night and when the lights first come on. Any zoas that are closed probably have one on or near it or some other irritant. Can also be spotted during the day.

I do mine for a minute or two but I would get some different opinions on thsi. There are many here much more experianced than myself when it comes to these matters. Just thought I would help get the info started.

And from now on it would be good practise to QT zoas and to check them over very carefully even giving them a dip before placing them in your DT.

have you inspected the zoos closely for pests? like flric said, nudis...sundial snails..zoapox,etc...dips i've done are usually for 4-5minutes in either freshwater or lugols iodine. And realize that if they laid eggs then you'll have to redip later to make sure you get everything.

Thanks for the info. I will inspect them for pest and then dip them. I will QT the new ones IF i every get anymore. I may just stick with Shrooms from now on.

aww thats sad to hear...its just safe to dip prior to putting then in

zoas are great corals with a little care not to get the pests in your system they are pretty much a care free coral. dont discount them becuase of a problem that occured.

Amen to that. Check out some of the tanks full of the different colors of them and check out this thread https://forums.saltwaterfish.com/t/322311/zooanthid-database-picture-intense-thread
These are just a fraction of the different colors available and they are very easy to keep as long as you check them over and prep them first before putting them into your DT.
How about it folks, let's show some of those awesome zoa gardens to Mace. I know there are some out there.

I'm not giving up quit yet on them. Although shrooms are my fav Zoos come in a close 2nd. I just did a 5 min fresh water dip and come out with a pest I cant get a good picture of it. but it doesnt look like a critter on the link Flricordia gave me. time will tell.....
