Zoa Problem

I was asked today what is wrong with zoa's that are starting to stay closed and turning dark brown?
I didn't know what to say. I have no idea. He had dipped them in Lugol's to be sure that there is nothing eating them and nothing came out.
Any words of wisdom?

No words of wisdom but at the point they are encrusting high flow is about all that can be done for them as far as I know. Iodine dip may also help, doing this for a few days. I have had a small amount of success when I bought some at the LRS that looked like that and had a few opened polyps that I wanted, the rest I lightly brushed with a soft bristle toothbrush (each polyp carefully), dipped in iodine and kept in a moderate flow. Most did not make it and I fragged these off after I felt they would not recover.
