I sometimes see zoas where their base is barely visible and it looks like a small ball. Most are just randomly scattered on a flat rock. How does it form a sphere?

this usually happens when one egde of the mat gets lifted, when you pull a rock away or something like that then they just grow back down the other side of their own matt and asthey keep multiplying and growing out they tend to form a ball shape. ther are other ways too, some times they grow on very pointy rocks/ coral skeletons again you end up with a ball shape. happens alot over gaps too when they can get light from all sides.

I really like the look and am looking for a decent size frag or three to sit on the sand as display pieces. Thanks for the info.

You could make your own by glueing the matt to itself if you got a good enough peel, or find a SMALL round rock and glue zoas all over it they would fill in the spaces. heck you could even use a clear glass marble.
