Zoanthid names

So do people just make the names up or what? I always see these crazy names and just wonder where they came from! And out of curiosity do these have any names?

It is true that alot of retailers come up with their own names, I think it is necessary with so many varieties and color combinations of zoanthids in particular-without the crazy names it would be really hard to keep them strait with customers.
That being said, there is a website that is trying to become the index for all named zoanthids, it is ZOAID (I think it's okay to mention because they do not sell anything-but mods please let me know if I am wrong) This website is run by a guy named jeremy (WHODAH on the forums) along with a few others and they are very knowledgeable on the subject of zoanthids. They write very informative articles and try to keep lists of predators, diseases etc..
If you have searched the web for info on zoanthids, I think you will be suprised on how little useful information you actually find and I really appreciate other hobbyists like this who take the time to put together something like this for the rest of us.

alien eyes are a blue and green zoanthus. eagle eyes although similar to those are a bit different. the orange ones above are sunflowers.
are the names silly? yup but when i say eagle eyes most people have a good idea as to what i'm talking about but when i say orange skirt orange ring and bluish halo i could be talking about several different zoanthids. the names are very handy.

The pictures show the zoas as being more orange than they are in real life, they look red compared to my clown and orange ricordea so I guess its safe to say they are red? Would that make them eagle eyes? I just bought them bc they were pretty and cheap ($20) so I was just wondering!

adding a blue ring around the orange ring would make them eagle eyes. get out a marker. lol
