About 3 months ago my green colony of zoos started closing up. Now it seems to be spreading to an orange colony right next to it.
I have another orange colony near it on another rock that is doing fine. All corals are open and look well.
I also have a sea squirt that is fully open and looks good.
Nitrates 10
Amonia 0
Nitrite 0
Alk 3.0
Calcium 450
S.G. 1.026
Phos 0
Any ideas??? They are under 300wt MH 20k bulbs. But they Are kinda shaded.

see if you are able to "Frag them". Speg would know about that i believe. see if you can't get in touch with him.

Your problem is more than likely sundial snails. I dont have a pic on my computer, but search them on google. The are really small and will eat your zoos. Take the colonys out, give them a fw dip and take a magnifying glass and go over the rock really well and let me know what you find.

they will wipe them out, but often a first sign of them is the zoos being closed up.

Yea thats 100% correct, they are not getting eatin...they are just closed.
Its definetly not sundial snails. First a small part of the rock started closing about 3 months ago. Now almost the whole rock. It is also happening on the rock right next to it.

How do you know its not sundial snails? Did you take the rock out and look. Do a fw dip, it will kill the inverts on the rock (hopefully the sundial snails) but it wont kill the zoos. Theres different coral dips which can work, but in this case i dont think thats what you need.

I did a search on the sundial snails and I have a good area where I can view the zoo's. There is nothin on them or around them. I just did see any. What are the symptons???? They look fine....just closed!

nope, the lr will be fine. Most of the pods and stuff will die but if its a small piece of rock its no big deal. It wont cause enough die off to worry about...

is there anything growing around them? Only reason I ask is I have a white sponge thats spreading on one of my zoo colonies and is slowly choking them all out.

You will not kill your coral if you do a FW dip on it. You must make sure your FW has the same PH & temp as your tank water and limit the dip to only a couple minutes but if you do it will be fine. It may stress the coral slightly but it will be fine after a few hours at the most. Many people do this technique on every new coral before placing it into the tank to ensure its free of any parasites, etc.

hmmm..... if you were to do this, how would you manage to get freshwater at the same pH as your tank?
