    125 gallon filtration no sump

You will be fighting a uphill struggle not using a sump. Canisters and hang-on back filters are nitrate storage units. I know there will be a few responses that disagree with my statement and there are always people who have never had a problem. But, for the majority of us in the hobby, we...

    My 125

Very well said, Pegasus. All I can say is don't get in a hurry, ask a ton of questions and have patience. I have at least 3 go to people, who have been in the hobby for a at least a decade now, for questions. I am always up for suggestions and to help others wherever I can. Here is the same...

    My 125

Hi Everybody. I don't post often, but thought I would share a pic of my 14 month old 125. As with most tanks, its a work in progress. Comments always welcomed!

    reef crystals

I've already considered it a success. I've been dosing with dowflake and epsom salts for over 2 years now. I learned of these techniques from a, now, friend of mine who deals with high end corals, who has decades more experience than I do. I feel I have more control over the levels. As far...

    reef crystals

I've stopped using reef crystals and use regular Instant Ocean. Instead of limewater, I use dowflake for calcium and epsom salts for magnesium. Some will argue against this, but I've had great success.

    My 75 gallon

Thanks! I have to admit this tank was so worth the 2 years of agony. I think I made every mistake possible along the way. There are no shortcuts in this hobby! That was a tough lesson to learn! My goal in 2014 is to upgrade to a 125 gallon. A six foot tank for plenty of room for tangs to...

    My 75 gallon

Thank you for your positive comments! It has definitely been a learning process, and still learning. I'm hoping I can now help others achieve the tank they have in mind. My next project is a small sps tank. Time to start reading and learning again. Again, thank you for the positive comments!

    My 75 gallon

This is my 75 gallon tank. I wish I had taken a picture of this tank a year ago. It was a hair algae mess barely able to support fish. After seeking help from others in the hobby and listening to what they have to say (remember the veterans in this hobby have been through it already) I have a...

    high nitrates

I figured something was going on. My API test card goes to 160 and it was already at 80 by the time I got done shaking that test tube. I will order a salifert test, hopefully it will be more accurate. The way everything is thriving, I didn't see how the nitrates can be through the roof. Thanks!

    high nitrates

Hello all, I am happy to say since the last time I posted, which has been a while (I read the forums more than anything), our tank has finally started taking off. I am still baffled by the high nitrates. Thinking it was something in the way I was testing, I took a sample to my lfs and they...

    herbivores dying

I might also add the we had a six line wrasse for several months. It looked happy and healthy until it decided to jump out of the tank. Again...a non-herbivore that did fine. I plan on replacing the wrasse as soon as I build a screen for the top of the tank.

    herbivores dying

I somewhat doubt that....with only 3 small fish and 6 small corals in a 75.

    herbivores dying

Keep in mind, it is not just tangs. Snails and angelfish don't make it much more than a week.

    herbivores dying

I buy rodi from my lfs. It tests zero tds.

    herbivores dying

Yes...plenty of nori. We never saw the clown bully anything in the tank. He just sticks close to the nem. I don't think its a stararvation issue. Most of the fish didn't make it a week.

    herbivores dying

There is some green hair algae on a few rocks... We did have a bad problem, meaning on every rock, but its 95% gone. The tank looks great, we are happy with the appearance, just so frustrated because we would like to have a angel and a tang. We tried 2 different coral beauties with no luck...

    herbivores dying

This is my first time to post on a fish forum, but I have nowhere else to turn. My lfs is at a loss for our situation. We have a 75 gallon reef tank. Its been up and running for about a year and a half now. Every herbivore we introduce in our tank does not live very long. It doesn't matter...
