    Scrubber materials

When figuring out what materials to use for an algae scrubber, don't neglect considering strings... sometimes they can hold on to the most growth, because they are narrow and light can get to all sides of them.

silverado61. Rebuilding my 72g bow front and stand.

Nice DIY of our upflow scrubber design. See how it grows, and I can then recommend improvements if you want.

    Moving Long Distance

Good point about just shipping it. Most shippers/friends can hold it until you are there, and ship it to meet you.

    Sugar dosing experience

Good time to point out, that sugar is a subset of carbon dosing. You can read up a lot on carbon dosing nowadays; ten years ago it was "new".

    horseshoe crab

Copper in the blood is a new one for me. Maybe that's what I have. Anyway, horseshoes at the very least are clumsy and will knock everything over.

Lowest cost and easiest way to eliminate green hair, bubble, turf and slime algae from your aquarium (hopefully permanently).

Scrubbers compared to refugiums If you are starting a new tank, then the obvious difference is that a scrubber gives you the option of not having a fuge at all. There are other uses for a sump/fuge of course, but we'll only cover the filtration concerns here. A not-so-obvious difference of...

Chaeto Reactors compared to Algae Scrubbers

Chaeto Reactors compared to Algae Scrubbers, part 3 Now for nutrients. Nutrients are defined as inorganics, not organics. The word "nutrient" is sometimes confused with "nutrition", and maybe in restaurants the words might mean the same thing, but for aquarists they are totally different...

Chaeto Reactors compared to Algae Scrubbers

About 1/5 the physical size, for equal nutrient "pull". And the algae that comes out of a scrubber is not puffed up as much, or it is dark slime, so it's more concentrated. But of course if you have the space and it's already working for you, then why change :)

Chaeto Reactors compared to Algae Scrubbers

Because of their slow rates. See the size you have. It takes that much to equal the rate of nutrient removal of a specialized device.

Chaeto Reactors compared to Algae Scrubbers

Glad you can make use of the info. You generally don't want a fuge with a scrubber, because the scrubber will kill and consume the macros in the fuge. If you are trying to filter, then a scrubber is better. Yes that's a good, typical setup. Yes certainly they are easy to build. They are...

Chaeto Reactors compared to Algae Scrubbers

Chaeto Reactors compared to Algae Scrubbers, part 2 Now for some basic differences; more detailed differences will be in subsequent posts. The first and maybe most important difference is that chaeto reactors grow only in saltwater (fish only, or fish with live rock, or reef) whereas algae...
