Filter media for extra tank

I recently moved my fish and cuc into their new tank and have since drained the tank they were in. I am going to keep the extra tank as a quarantine tank if I ever need one, but don't want to keep it set up. Is there a way I can preserve the biological media on the HOB filter that was on the tank? Would putting the bio-wheel in a plastic container with aquarium water work long term?

The best way to preserve the biologic filtration is to set it up on your display tank.

The plastic container will be a disaster...

Many people use a sponge filter in their quarantine. The sponge can be placed in the tank or sump then pulled out when it is needed. The sponge would then be thrown away or sterilized with bleach when you are done with it. You can maybe do that with the bio wheel.
