i'm no expert but i think when you add new LS some of you water will soak into it resulting in lower ph for a while i believe if you just do water changes with it that may counteract the new LS just my thoughts though i'd wait and see what experts say

your HD may be thrashed but only non essintial parts your OS is probably fine its probably just a few sectors or it could be something running in the background but if you said you shut all that down then my first thought goes back to your HD you may have dust on it
