My 65g as I progress through

Here's my 65g after 4 months. I have a lot of new coral and I will be finding permanent homes for a lot of them in the near future. I will be posting on my blog site so that I don't have to copy and paste on multiple forums. My first month and details on my equipment: First Month of Saltwater...

    Idea? underwater solar equipment

Because solar power is over hyped by the green fad. You would need panels the size of your fish tank just to power a koralia.

    My tank after a month

I will be switching over to Oceanic once I run out (which will be through my next batch of water). It seems like IO is really for FO tanks and not exactly for reefs. For now, what should I use to dose my tank with some extra calcium? Should I just setup a kalk drip system? I have been using...

BIGGEST mistake you've made in the hobby

I'm new but my biggest mistake thus far is that I didn't drill my display tank and put a bulkhead for the drain to the sump. Now I am paranoid all the time about possible overflow.

    My tank after a month

Well, I tested my water again today and my calcium is at 300ish. I suppose I can just do more than 10% water changes a week to try and get things a bit more stable or something. The metal halides came with my used package off craigslist. The guy didn't really spare much expenses so it's probably...

    Using Ocean water

I used it during my initial fill near the coast of central CA and I am pretty sure it was the leading reason to my quick cycle since all my live rock was dead anyways.

    My tank after a month

I will go ahead and discontinue the trace elements then. My corals seem to be doing significantly better after adding the calcium. The mushrooms expand to about 2x what they used to before I did that. The calcium also seems to have stabilized. I've been checking my parameters every other day. I...

    My tank after a month

So am I going too fast? I've had my tank for about a bit over a month and all the parameters are good. I have to add a bit of calcium every other day and I also add a tiny bit of trace to keep them at good levels. * Ammonia - 0ppm * Nitrite - 0ppm * Nitrate - 0ppm * pH - 8.2 * Hardness - 8.5dKH...

    Sand Sifter Gobie!

Bullet Gobi. I just put one in my tank and he's been doing an awesome job at keeping the top of the sand spotless along with my crabs/snails. Not really sure about it long term but so far so good. I'm just concerned with it having enough food. Not really sure how to supplement it.

    Skimmer upgrade

I have the octopus 200 in my tank. It skims beautifully in my 65 gallon and absolutely easy to set up. The only thing about it is that you must replace the air tubing with something that isn't going to collapse and I wish they would do the mesh mod for you but instead you have to do it...

    sump/fuge building

Here's a quick summary of mine: http://rashedtalukder.com/index.php?...bies&Itemid=56 Just make sure you have all the stuff (skimmer, heater, etc) already planned out and sized before you glue it together. Also don't walk away before everything sets or else you'll end up like me and have a...

im going to make some fish / coral food

You would rather your fish not eat a protein? Isn't that part of the reason why you are feeding it meat? Using gelatin would mean you can just put the cubes or whatever into the tank without it going everywhere. It would stay in one spot and the fish can just come up to it and eat it instead of...

im going to make some fish / coral food

Has anyone tried adding gelatin to the mix so that you don't have to freeze it and can just put it in the fridge? It would also make it easy to just cut out cubes and dump it into the tank. The fish can just eat it without it traveling everywhere.

Anyone have a 54 gal corner bow? (powerhead placement)

Spray paint doesn't last. I am going to try and buy some RIT dye in black and just boil the pvc for a while in it and see if that works. That will never come off. I just need to be sure I have a pot big enough for this.

SW and Sand right off the beach

I alternate between RO/DI water and ocean water during my 2 week changes. I've only had my tank for 2 months now but everything is doing great and seems really happy. Also the crabs and snails I've gotten from the ocean seem to be much hardier than the store bought stuff (though not as good looking)
