I've had 2 blues and 2 yellow tails since I cycled my tank almost 4 years ago and have not had a problem with them at all. One of my blues died a couple of months ago, so now I only have 3. They pretty much mind their own business.
IMO, a smart way to do it is to figure out all the fish you like and then do research on each of them to figure out the max tank size because some may outgrow your tank. That narrows it down a bit. Then I would look at which fish can be tankmates and which cannot. Some are aggressive and some...

I was told cleaner shrimp only live about a year. I had one for about a year that just died one day. I asked my lfs and they told me that the average lifespan was about a year. I bought another one because I use it to keep the fish clean of ich naturally. He does a pretty good job!
