Nice setup

Definately replace the heater. I like to use multiple heaters of lower wattage adding up to the total wattage needed. If one goes bad it won't raise the tank temp as fast or quick. Keeping heaters in your sump is a good idea too.

Silicates or phosphate levels might need checked. Absolutely do not use tap water and make sure your source is good quality. Skimmer would only help but I don't see it as a solution to the problem. Do a search on diatoms I am sure you could find more.

I want to thank everyone for all your useful info. I have been left with a choice, Harley or Reef Tank. I guess now I am doing my part in helping the environment. No more reef tank...selling everything. It was a 15 year adventure and I am sure I will get back into it. Take care all.

I have seen that happen before, using the product called "Slime Away" Made the skimmer go crazy. Just turn off the skimmer and do a 25% water change. Check the skimmer again it should be better if not do another 20% water change. It should go away. I would not recommend this red slime...

I have 2 Aquarium Systems sea test SG meters. When testing my water they always give me 2 different readings. One shows 1.024 and the other 1.021. I hope the fist one is right and the second is defective. Is there a better brand I could use to check my water. What SG meter do you suggest I use?

I have a similar problem. DSB 5"-6" but I am also using a filtration media that reduced nitrites and nitrates(so it says). Everything tests 0, but the nitrates test 20. Is my chemical filtration slowing down the effects of the DSB? Should I stop using chemical filtration? Approx. how long...
