    What Is Ro

Our LFS charges $1.50 per gallon for the RO/salt mix, and it's reportedly going up in price again! I bought an awesome RO/DI unit from Filters Direct on the famous auction site. It is a six stage 110 gallon per day unit - for $90 plus $12 shipping. It will pay for itself quickly.

    Halide heat..more or less?

I think some wonderful things can be achieved by mixing lighting. For example, you may need the halide lighting for the health of your corals, clams and anemones, but you may prefer the colors when you supplement with other - maybe bluer - lighting. So why not blend a bit? There's an...

Saltwater Fish - few corals to sell?

Hi gang. This is a question for experienced reef shoppers here. It looks like Saltwaterfish.com has well over 100 corals that have been for sale at some time, but there are only about 25 they actually have for sale now. If you ignore the common zoos, shrooms, and star polyps it's probably closer...

Mix clowns! Don't Mix clowns! ?????

Thanks Slammy. Do you think the result would have been different if your tank had been larger or if you had several large, hospitable anemones? I'm thinking that we might be able to create several seperate clown habitats in the same tank by keeping several host anenomes in seperate areas of the...

Mix clowns! Don't Mix clowns! ?????

We love clowns. We've got a pair of small aqua-cultured perculas now, and we'd love to add some others. On this site I went to the fish section, clicked on the percula, and read the notes. Right at the top it said, "Don't mix with other clownfish." Then, in the paragraph right below the warning...

    Exhaust Fan for tank

OKay...but the real issue, if I recall my physics, is how much total heat is added to the system. There must be a balance between heat intensity and the surface area through which the heat is communicated to the environment, right? . (Example: The small stove burner probably has to be set at a...

    Exhaust Fan for tank

Actually, I read that many of them WERE hotter than halides, much to my surprise. (I mentioned/asked about that on a neighboring thread about halide heat, and Bang Guy confirmed it. Others subsequently confirmed it saying that heat is primarily a function of total wattage, not bulb type. Also...

    Exhaust Fan for tank

Well, they've got built-in fans whirling away, and they're still very hot to the touch. I didn't want to speculate/gamble on how hot they might get if the built-in fans were rendered ineffective by mashing the top of the light (exhause vent) into the top of the canopy. I wanted to make sure that...

    Halide heat..more or less?

If you're doing the flea-bay drill on the lights, make sure ALL the parts are included. There were some auctions with nice, complete systems pictured - and notes at the bottom saying that the reflectors ($30 per bulb) and bulbs ($50 each) were NOT included. That turned their great $199 deal into...

Something is eating all my shrimp!!!!!!!!!!!

I wondered about mantis too... My coral banded shrimp doesn't seem to bother my skunk or fire shrimp, but we added a perpermint a few days ago and have not seen him since... My skunk shrimp seems to have a special relationship with our LTA...it looks like he cleans it. Now he's dancing in and...

    Halide heat..more or less?

When I did the installation in my canopy I put one Coralife "Lunar Light" (260 watt) in front with about a 5% cant towards the back, and one in back, with a 5% cant towards the front. That leaves me a strip about 10" wide down the center of my canopy. That's where the halides will go so I'll...

    Halide heat..more or less?

Well, I did it. I bit on a pretty good package deal: $259 for a "satisfaction guaranteed", "plug-n-play", retro-fit, halide pair with two 400 watt bulbs. I specified the 10,000s unless they will substitute one of the new wiz-bang 14,000 bulbs. My tank is 60" long, and I've only got 48" of...

    Halide heat..more or less?

Kristin, I'm reading voraciously and teetering on the brink of purchase... I actually have the auction site up on another page. On the heat front: My compacts have been sitting on my acrylic tank for the last five weeks or so - and they apparently generate more heat. From what I have read I...

    Halide heat..more or less?

Kristin, the furniture builder who made my canopy asked if I was installing halide lights when I placed the order - because he has a "halide canopy" and "regular". The halide canopy is 12" tall. Heat is a significant concern - but there is nothing magical about the 24" inch distance for heat...

    Exhaust Fan for tank

I have a newer 150 gallon tank with a pair of 260 watt Coralife "Lunar Lights". (They are 48" compacts.) My 60" canopy just arrived yesterday. It's about 12" tall, with three large doors in the front and a back that is completely open to facilitate ventilation. I have installed the 48"...

    Wet/dry turned into fuge?

I converted a wet/dry into a fuge. It was easy to do. First, I drilled a 1.25 inch hole near the top of the wet/dry I was converting. Then I installed a bulkhead fitting in that hole. That bulkhead is like a spigot sticking out of the top/end of the converted wet/dry tank, and it becomes the...

    Halide heat..more or less?

This afternoon I bought two 6" clip=on fans at the home improvement store for $6.99 each. I removed the clips and installed the pair inside my canopy. It works great. Now I'm ready to go to the famous auction site and take my punishment. What Halide bulbs would you recommend Bang Guy?

    Halide heat..more or less?

I have a 150 gallon tank with a just arrived 12" tall canopy. The tank is 24 inches deep. The canopy back is completely open to facilitate heat dissipation, and I'm going to Home Depot this morning to look at fans. My current lighting is a pair of Coralife 260 watt "Moonglow" fixtures, and I...
