    opinions on Magnums

Try calling them and asking about your warranty. I did that, and even though my 350 is over 2 years old, the customer service guy (Justin I think) was kind enough to send me a new impeller free of charge (I had to pay for shipping). So instead of spending $40-50 for a new impeller, I spent $7.

Does West Los Angeles Need another LFS

One place I frequent is Kyoto Aquarium on Wilshire in Koreatown. It's run by Mr. Kyoto who's been in the business for over 30 years. He's friendly and knowledgeable, but old fashioned in his beliefs. He has a few tanks for saltwater, and keeps most of his livestock in one 60 gallon tank...

Does West Los Angeles Need another LFS

Two more somewhat good LFS are Apex Aquariums in Culver City, near the Sepulveda Blvd and Culver Blvd intersection, and Jim's Exotic Fishes in El Segundo on Sepulveda Blvd. Apex by far has the most selection I've seen around, and their specimens are in good to great conditions. Aquarium Stock is...

    Starting a saltwater aquarium

You can get some good cured Marshall Island rock for $2/pound. I used it and it pretty much cycled my tank in under a week. I've had ammonia and nitrite levels at 0 for almost 3 weeks now. email me at yellowg555@yahoo.com if you want further info about this rock.

    Thinking about moving....Suggestions?

I'd recommend Southern California in general because.. 1) Weather NEVER gets below 50 on the coldest day in winter. 2) It is NEVER humid. If anything, only hot and DRY. 3) If you live in LA, you are never more than 2 hours from the ocean, snow, hikeable trails in forests, and some good city...

How do you guys maintain a clean sandbed?

Wouldn't the main purpose of the DSB be to harbor both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria? I am not relying solely on the DSB for filtration as I am running 2 Magnum 350's as well. If I keep the puffer well fed, will hermits be relatively safe? Can puffers and triggers break through the hermits'...

PROJECT COSTS $$$$$$ and a thank you

I don't want to say the name of the place publicly, but feel free to email me at yellowg555@yahoo.com and I will let you know. I actually didn't order it online...I went to their warehouse in Long Beach and picked out the rocks I wanted from their 3 massive holding tanks. The reason why it's...

    When to remove cocktail shrimp?

I used 200 pounds of dead aragonite sand, seeded with 40 pounds of live sand from this website. I have 100# of cured live rock in there as well. Would the combination of live sand and cured rock be possible to make for a fast cycle? That question may seem like I want to jump the gun, but I...

How do you guys maintain a clean sandbed?

I was planning on something like a bluejaw trigger, porc puffer, regal tang, purple tang initially. The bluejaw and porc are relatively peaceful from what I've read. About algae problems, I think the tangs will enjoy an excess abundance of algae if it gets to that point right? I am planning...

How do you guys maintain a clean sandbed?

I recently setup a 140G tank with a 4" DSB and 100 pounds of live rock. I want to go the aggressive route, but am worried about having no cleanup crew since those fish will eat them for lunch. How do you guys cope with this problem, or if you have found a solution, would you mind sharing? :D

PROJECT COSTS $$$$$$ and a thank you

I found a place that sells cured marshall live rock for $2/pound. I bought 100 pounds of it recently and even went to their holding tanks to pick out the ones I wanted. The reason why it's so cheap is because most of the corraline algae has died off, but there is still some left. Great...

    When to remove cocktail shrimp?

I checked the ammonia yesterday and it was 0, while nitrites were 0.5. Does this mean the cycle is nearly complete? I feel like an idiot for not checking sooner...do people check those levels everyday after they throw in a shrimp?

    When to remove cocktail shrimp?

I've had a cocktail shrimp sitting at the bottom of my tank for about 6 days now. It has a fuzzy "cocoon" around it. How can I tell when to remove it? And what is that "fuzzy" stuff around it? Some sort of aquatic mold?

My current setup, is it ok?

I am getting all my sand by the middle of next week and I had a question about that. If add 40 pounds of live sand (from this website) on top of the dead aragonite sand I'm getting, then add saltwater...will the newly mixed saltwater kill off a lot of the "live" elements of the live sand...

    Acrylic scratch removers

Did a search, and didn't find a specific brand or cleaner that works well for people. The tank I just bought came with some Novus scratch remover (3 steps, 3 bottles) which didn't do any good. For those that use scratch removers, what brand do you use and where did you get it? I want to buff...

My current setup, is it ok?

How will the water get oxygen then? About the biofiltration, I don't want a wall of rock look, I just want to make this tank an aggressive tank with plenty of room for them to swim. Won't a 4inch DSB and 70 pounds of live rock be enough for biofiltration? I was thinking of a protein skimmer...

My current setup, is it ok?

I have yet to start cycling my new 140G tank, and was wondering if this setup would work ok. The tank I got came with 2 Magnum 350 filters, one with a micron filter to polish the water and the other with charcoal in a mesh sleeve surrounded by a filter pad. The guy I bought it from ran this...
