    Live Sand vs. Crushed Coral

I am about to do the switch myself, after having the CC for about a year. Although i had no problems with my water parameters, I have accumulated much rock which makes it EXTREMELY difficult and annoying to vaccum seperately. Definately go with sand right from the start....plus it just looks better.

    Live Rock Question

I am pretty sure 1 - 1.5 lbs per gallon is a safe bet.

    Live Rock Question

If you are setting up a new tank and have no livestock and are still in the process of cycling, you can add the liverock right to your tank.

Best Way to add Live Sand??

So I am finally ditching my CC for live sand, because I want to upgrade my tank in the future, and I decided I'd better get rid of the coral now before I add anymore rock or inverts. I currently have a 29gal FOWLR, with roughly 20 lbs of rock in there and around 1/2 in of CC at the bottom. What...

    Creating an angry little world

Most people will advised not to use damsels due to their aggressive nature (and they are hard to catch if you want to get rid of them). A mated pair of clowns are a good idea, chromis, small angel or firefish are also good ideas for a small tank (not all of these together though :)

    Tomato Clown Discoloration....

I have to tomato clowns that have become "dark". It is not spots, but rather appears to be a darkening of the scales. I know they are not maroon or cinnamon clowns either. I thought at first it might be due to diet, but i switch between brine, pellet and flakes so I dont think that is the...

    "Established tank"

I pretty sure it means any tank that has been up and running post-cycle, for 6 months to a year. Depending on what you are planning to do (FOWLER, REEF) ect, your tank will consist of different things. If you are planning to go reef, you will definatley need to wait at LEAST 6 months before...

    Protein skimmer for a 29g

I am thinking about getting a protien skimmer for my 29g FOWLR, since it appears that they are a necessity. What are the good names out there? I am willing to pay for a good one since I agree with everyone that quality will pay off in the long run. Thanks.

    Conversion: FOWLR to Reef

I have a 29g FOWLR that has been up and running for 9 months now. I have a basic HOB filter, basic light and powerhead. I was wondering what I would need to possibly start adding corals and such, and a rough estimate of how much it would cost.

    I hope this is normal....

    Cool.......thanks, it looks better everyday.

    I hope this is normal....

I recently returned from going home for a week to find the long back fin on my firefish to be "cutoff". The only culprits could have been my two blue legged hermit crabs, but both appear to be way to small to snip a fin. I'm guessing that maybe they just lose it every once and a while??? The fin...

    29g ?

I have a 29g with two tom clowns, a firefish and flame angel. Most would say I am pushing the limit, even with an established tank. Obviously dont add things fast, give it alot of time and do the regular maintinence and you should be ok. It comes down to your preferences really. Additionally...

    Next Addition.....Ideas??

My 30 g FOWLR has been up and running close to 9 months now. Ive kept it pretty simple because I am in college and can't afford alot, although it has helped me go slow and take my time. I currently have 2 tomato clowns, 1 flame angel, 5 turbo snails, two blue legged hermits and a camelback...

    Boosting Coraline growth

I was wondering what types of treatments and or lights can be used to speed up coraline growth, and if they are safe/worth the trouble. I am currently seeding my base rock and have no problem waiting a year, however I was wondering if there is a good way to speed up the process.

    Whats up with this???

I have two tomato clowns that have black spots on them, they sort of look like bruises but the are all over each one on both sides. I thought it might have just been from their treatment at the store (*****) but after 4 months they are still there, and they don't appear to be going away. Their...

To vacuum or not to vacuum.....

I also have CC in a 30 gal......if you keep a real shallow bed (mine is probably 1/2 in) then you reduce the risk of trapping nitrates and you make it easier to vacuum. I do mine every 3-4 weeks when I do a 25% water change. Have had no problems and real stable levels for close to 7 months now.
