    hypo/copepod update

Carrie, I'm about 9 days into hyposalinity (ie; 9 full days at 1.009) and I noticed last night that almost all the copepodes in my tank are gone. There were only a few left that I could see, but I don't expect them to last much longer. My poor mandarin fish is going on a diet for the next 3...

Bumps on Powder Blue Tang / Ammonia

Anthem, no, live rock is all I had for bio-load bacteria. But shouldn't I be able to keep the ammonia levels at zero without the live rock?

Bumps on Powder Blue Tang / Ammonia

Speaking of water quality, I have had to battle ammonia in the tank I am doing the hyposalinity on. It doesn't make sense with the amount of water I have been changing since starting the process. I've been changing up to 25% on a daily basis and my ammonia levels are still registering around...

Bumps on Powder Blue Tang / Ammonia

Thanks Beth. The fish is eating well again and is quite active in the tank. I'm only about 8 days or so into hypo so hopefully the next 3 weeks of hypo will take care of it.

Bumps on Powder Blue Tang / Ammonia

The tang had stopped eating for a few days, but has just started eating again so I'll resume the garlic treatment. These 'bumps' have been on the tang for about a week now. If there is a treatment for it, should I start it now?

Bumps on Powder Blue Tang / Ammonia

My powder blue tang, along with all my other fish, are currently undergoing hyposalinity treatment for ich. Most of the salty spots have cleared up, but the powder blue has these strange whitish bumps along both sides. Are these ich related or is this a secondary infection of some sort? I...

    Fish behavior during hyposalinity?

Beth, is that why my attempts at mouth to mouth resuscitation didn't get me very far?! ;)

    Hyposalinity & Copepods

I'm using both a glass hydrometer and a swing arm type. I know they're not the most accurate, but using them together I think/hope it's accurate. What is the best device to measure salinity? I think I heard of something called a refractometer?(sp)

    Fish behavior during hyposalinity?

    The vet charged $40 (CAN $) ~ $25 US.

    Hyposalinity & Copepods

I decided to handle the ich in the main tank because it was easier to move the live rock and the few inverts I have than to move the fish. Also, my QT tank doesn't have much in the way of filtration so I figured the live rock would do better in it.

    Hyposalinity & Copepods

I'm about 5 days into hypo now and I was just wondering how long I can expect the copepods to continue living? I moved the live rock out of the tank and left the fish. I'm happy the mandarin fish still has something to eat, but I was just curious to know how long the food supply will last.

    Fish behavior during hyposalinity?

Carrie, I used 3 different hydrometers (both swing arm and glass type) to try an eliminate as much error as possible. I think the combination worked pretty well. I never looked into a refractometer, so I don't know how much they cost or where you would get one.

    Fish behavior during hyposalinity?

It was easier to remove the live rock and the few inverts that I had and use the display tank as the hospital tank. So, I still had substrate for the jawfish. However, he really wasn't doing well since the ich and didn't always bury himself in the substrate. I did notice that my watchman goby...

    Fish behavior during hyposalinity?

Terry, just repeating what the vet said to me. The vet probably was not an expert on fish disease, but she was able to put a stitch in the jawfish to close him up. I used 3 different hydrometers (both swing arm and glass type) during the process to ensure some level of accuracy. If it wasn't...

    Fish behavior during hyposalinity?

Yes, I have achieved the 1.009. I slowly reduced salinity over a 48 hour period. I lost a clown fish and my blue spotted jawfish during the process. The death of the jawfish was quite sad as his body split open and his intestines starting coming out. He was still alive and I was able to find...

    Fish behavior during hyposalinity?

I'm about 3 days into hyposalinity in my 72 gal tank to cure an ich problem. Just curious to know what sort of fish behavior I can expect during the 30 day hyposalinity period? Should I expect the fish to be fairly inactive and have poor appetites? Or are these still a symptoms of the ich...

    Ich, Quarantines & Inverts - Beth/Terry?

Thank you for your help - I'm getting everything done now!

    Ich, Quarantines & Inverts - Beth/Terry?

Another question - if I put a Mandarin fish in QT for a month, can he survive that long without eating? It only eats live copepods and there won't be any copepods in the QT tank.

    Ich, Quarantines & Inverts - Beth/Terry?

I have an outbreak of ich in my 72 gallon reef tank. I've got a quarantine tank ready to go, so I can move the fish into it and start hyposalinity today. My understanding is that the ich in the main tank will die naturally over 30 days - if I don't put any food in. Is this correct? My problem...
