    Aquascape

Always add rock before sand. Make sure there are hiding places for the fish. Otherwise whatever looks good to you is what you should do.

    New to hobby

Star fish are tough They need really stable water and do best in large mature tanks. Personally I’d work at getting rid of the aphasia. They will take over your tank in no time.

    Flavoguttatus Anthias

I’ve read that once they are established they are pretty easy.

    75 or 40 gal.

In my opinion a refugium can’t really be too big. When I had a 40 I used a 16 gallon sump, probably half was the refugium.

    Diatom Bloom?

It is part of a new tank. They all go through it. Diatoms need silica. It takes time to deplete it. Turbo snails will eat it but you don’t want to get too many or once the diatoms are gone they will starve.

    Sumps

An additional divider between the rocks and return would allow you to have a Refugium for things like pods and you could have macro algae in it. The macroalgae helps with nitrate removal.

    Sumps

I’d suggest chambers as well. At least one for he return pump to keep things out of it. I just have rock in my sump and my skimmer and my starry Benny who decided to move out of the display. I don’t like sand in the sump. I want to have chaeto in my sump but I can’t keep it alive.

I have my sump in the basement too. It is so much easier to work in it and maintain it.

No water changes while the tank is cycling. It will just prolong the process.

    my FIRST REEF TANK

If it heats it that fast it will cook it just as fast. I use 2 150 W in my 120.

What to do with QT water?

Just keep the water circulating with a power head and it should be fine. To keep the bio filter going you might have your brother toss a bit of food into it a couple times a week.

    my FIRST REEF TANK

For starters get a much smaller heater. Maybe 100 W. If it gets stuck on it will cook the tank very fast. I’m guessing the life you are talking about came in on the live rock. If so the anemone is probably a pest and you want to get rid of it. If it is an anemone you bought, return it...

    Finishing my 65G Stocking?

I have a nice flame angel. Probably 3 years now. I have never had an issue with it. Some can be aggressive and some eat coral.

    75 or 40 gal.

I think a 40 makes a great reef you just can’t have many fish.
