It has to have airflow that's why most people don't use lids. If the water is circulating under stale air it doesn't help gas exchange because the air above the water will be loaded with CO2. You need some way to blow the CO2 out from under the lid. It's not going to take much airflow but it...

Is it necessary to drill holes in a saltwater tank?

    As well as more effective.

If you can find a way to get airflow across the water surface then the gap you have is adequate.

    blue/green chromis

I had a shoal of Lyretail Anthias that was successful. But that was in a 900 gallon loaded with live zooplankton.

Is it necessary to drill holes in a saltwater tank?

Really good idea. I prefer the holes on the bottom but i's individual preference.

    New 3-4 gallon nano reef

Nope, Stichodactyla tapetum would work well in that tank. I would advise against having a fish though. Mysid Shrimp would be very entertaining in a tank like that instead of a fish.

    10 gallon nano reef

For nano tanks the Stomatella Snails cannot be beat. It's best to have a variety though, Cerith and Collonista would round it out nicely but the Hermits might eat the Collonista. Your odds of success drop dramatically with two fish in a nano. Be careful with the Firefish, they love to carpet...

    Random Lack of O2? Help?

I mostly commented on the mixing temperature being cold freshwater. Storing it shouldn't be much of a problem other than wasting energy. Bacteria does grow faster in warm saltwater but that shouldn't cause any harm that I can think of.

    Random Lack of O2? Help?

I can't know for sure what the problem was. I do know through some of my experiments that the PH of freshly mixed saltwater fluctuates a LOT. Drastic PH swings can cause the symptoms you described. Another though is that there's a lot of chemical reactions in freshly mixed saltwater. I would...

    Random Lack of O2? Help?

Yes, this will cause problems every time. My opinion on a couple things: 1 - Mix the salt with cold water, not warm water. 2 - Be sure to pour the salt into the water and not the other way around. Stir the water as violently as possible while slowly pouring in the salt. None of the salt...

Summary - Two types of Sea Whips: Photosynthetic - Require good lighting and some supplemental feeding. Experience level - moderate. Can be kept long term by most hobbyists. Non-photosynthetic - Do not require lighting but require heavy zooplankton feeding at least twice daily (Dusk &...

Some Sea Whips are photosynthetic so MUST be in good light. These are the ones compatible with captive environments.

It resembles one of the non-photosynthetic Gorgonians. Perhaps Diodogorgia sp. Non-photosynthetic Gorgonians are incredibly difficult to keep in a small captive environment. They require lots and lots of zooplankton (they will eat dead zooplankton). The ones in the photo appear to be starving.

    What is this...

I agree the red algae resembles Cyanobacter. The green could also be but it also looks like coralline.

Caulerpa racemosa peltata. It will dominate the rocks so I hope you're serious about that.
