What about a micron sock? Should i use one? Or will the protein skimmer take care of it?

My LFS has a display tank with a sump. The tank has two overflows prebuilt into it. The sump has no media as in a refugium or a wet/dry setup. It's just the drain the protein skimmer and the return line/pump. The tank is perfect and thriving. Should I do this? They advised I set mine up like...

I have a 55 gallon "reef-ready" tank and i need to determine which size bulkhead I need. The smaller hole in the overflow is 1/2 inches and the large one is 1 and 3/4 of an inch. What are the correct bulkhead sizes I need to fit the holes in my tank perfectly?
