He seems perfectly healthy and happy he just looks bad but he's not scratching or breathing heavy so my guess is maybe my yellow tang is picking on him but the marks don't look like scratches

No he's in the DT there's no signs of the spots irritating him he eats like a pig and is constantly on the move picking at the rock. They aren't raised there just dark spots on both sides of him

I picked this little guy up a few days ago he eats anything and everything he's one of the thickest fish I've ever seen for his size but he's got dark mark all over him can anyone identify what they might be.

If he's picking at mysis I would take his veggies away for a day or two and only feed mysis.

Meaty foods will help him put weight on but as long as he's eating I wouldn't worry to much about it. It also sounds like he'll probably start eating more mysis in a few days.

I've never used it but it seems like it would only be cost efficient for small tanks. Plus it's petsmarts store brand stuff so I don't think I could trust the quality.

What brand of test kit is everyone using? Why did you pick that brand? What brands would you recommend and why? What brands wouldn't recommend and why?

Yeah I have around 140-150lbs of rock. I use zoe and zoecon to soak the food in. I'll have to look into that ocean nutrition.

I have a 6'x20" 135 gallon tank so I'm guessing it's big enough for one. He'll also be in a fish only tank so I'm concerned about if he's reef safe or not. Is there anything special they need in there diet or is mysis, krill, algae and pellets enough?

What about the bacteria in a bottle stuff I know it won't make the tank cycle instantly but if it does actually have beneficial bacteria in it I think it might be worth using to help along with the water changes.

They aren't eating coral I know that. If do get one it won't be in a reef tank so does that mean I'll need to buy cheap coral to feed him?

Most cleaner wrasses end up dieing from malnutrition unless it's kept in a large heavily stocked tank.

Are you positive your only going to want a lionfish? They aren't very interesting they sit around most of the time unless your feeding them. So I'd plan my filtration around having multiple fish just incase you find your tank empty with just the lion.

Cascade makes some decent non expensive canister filters

Reef octopus bh1000 or bh2000 are pretty good skimmers.
